Dewar's 12 Year Old Bottling Note

The classic 12 year old blend from Dewars, this stuff is the successor to Dewar's "Double Aged" 12 Year Old - so named in reference to the additional six month marriage the whisky enjoys in oak after the initial maturation and blending. The practice is maintained despite the name change and the result is loads of flavour…

Whisky 12 Dram Collection

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: A heady note of juicy fruit and thick, creamy malt. Rather floral, and quite sweet with notes of toasted barley, almond and a tinge of honey.

Palate: The palate is perfectly poised with notes of barley malt, hot buttered toast, a little honey, and some aniseed spiciness.

Finish: A touch of smoke on the tail, alongside plenty of thick malt and sweetness.

Dewar's 12 Year Old - The Ancestor Reviews

The best!

Love it!

20th September 2020

A heady mix of smoke and honey

Not too strong one way or another; subtle blend of floral, spices, smoke and honey elements. Decent drink, for a decent price.

18th July 2020

Great value indeed !

Excellent competition to fruity & chocolaty Single Malts , but at the back of the Palate you do get The Grains ! For the price , it is a steal ...

7th July 2020

Great Value and excellent taste

Nothing compare with this very smooth and silky finish with excellent value

26th June 2020

Good enough for a queen great for a family.

Our favourite blend! Tried it when we visited the distillery two years ago and the whole family except one grandson are hooked. Sample to send to him, What good taste Queen Victoria had.

19th June 2020

Here’s a great mid ranger, smooth as hell. Love it. Bottle sniffs like sherry. White label is awful, this redeems the Dewars brand

31st May 2020

Great value malty honeyed blend

I was given a bottle as a present and it sat unopened for a couple of years as I kept getting excited by various single malts that appeared more exciting. Opened it only to use in a cocktail, but the thick honeyed aroma brought me back the next day to try it straight. Just had another glass in front of a roaring log fire and reckon this is a great drop, with a depth of flavour and no rough edges that makes it very good value indeed (okay, I did say it was a pressie!!). In trying to think of fancy taste-descriptors I’d go for rich nougat alongside the honey. Nice blend =)

22nd May 2020

Very good

It's been a while that drank scotch. I decided to try some. I poured about 1oz on the rocks, with water on side. I was very surprised how smooth this scotch is. I recommend this scotch. Maybe down the road I will try their 18 year.

Great flavour and value.

Excellent whisky. Great fruity flavours and smooth finish. Excellent value for money.

14th November 2019

Buy it - try it - sip it slow and live it

Amazing... has a strong taste of single malt within its wonderful blend base. My new favorite - kudos!

7th September 2019

Great value

I like this a lot and a lot more than the 15yr old, which seems bitter and acidic by comparison.

2nd August 2019

Very good in my taste.

1st August 2019

Beware, recent batches taste just like White Label !!

This has been my cheapest go-to that I buy. It's decent, but the last two times I've bought it, it takes more like White Label than the 12 year. I have a feeling they ran low on their quality ingredients and mixed in a bunch of the white label.

In fact, I have a glass sitting next to me that I've been swirling for the last 30 minutes, added a drop or two of water... nothing is making that terrible White Label corn taste go away.

!BEWARE! - If you get an older batch, it will probably be good. If you get a recent batch, it will probably taste like White Label.

I will be contacting Dewars and will remove this review once I have confirmed that they have remediated the problem, or the bad batch has run its course.

17th June 2019

Never enough Whisky in my home....

This is awesome value...I get to Hi Time 2-3 times a year from Hawaii...I always carry home a six pack or two as luggage.....Fabulous store with "KILLER" deals all the time....

22nd March 2019

Great value

My personal best so far at the low price end.

6th January 2019

Eminently drinkable, smooth and sweet.

Definitely a step up from the white label. Rather mild to the palate with sweetness and an earthy finish. Easy to drink too much. Not quite on par with single malts.

3rd January 2019

Good for what it is

Easy to drink chill filtered 80 proof blended, a touch of peat, kind of bland, fair play for a $40 liter

8th November 2018

I take it back

Hmm, having had a few more snifters of this since my last review (the one directly below), I take it back. Having tried it just after a Laphroaig was maybe not a good idea. Although this is a much gentler whisky, it's not as bland as I thought, not at all in fact. I detect now a lovely butteriness in the nose and the mouth that is quite enjoyable indeed, so I'm upping my review to 4 stars

7th November 2018

Nothing special

Personally, I'm surprised at the great reviews. I find it a bit thin and incipid. Too little nose, lacking in flavour and complexity.

5th November 2018

Great flavor, very reminiscent of Aberfeldy.

Excellent. Just plain Excellent.

5th October 2018

1st time bought this whisky ( 2 btls) at airport duty free and is surprisingly rich in flavour n smooth. Love it!!

14th September 2018

Good Stuff

A little more complex and “better” than Dewar’s White Label which I also like.

19th August 2018

Mejor imposible!!

No podrias obtener un mejor scotch por ese precio... de hecho es mejor que muchos de los single malt de mi bar... balance perfecto!!5 stars

2nd July 2018

Excellence in a blend

As a single malt drinker (always speyside only) I have converted to dewars 12 yo!@ at $43.00 approx Aus it's the best and smoothest damn scotch for the price.cant beleive it's a blend...johnny and chives...please don't waste your time.As a blend from the famous and smooth ABERFELDY whisky this is truly an Aitken blended masterpiece.Paul melb Australia

16th May 2018

Best £11 ive ever spent

Got this for £11.74 in tesco needles to say i bought 5 bottles at that price

15th May 2018

Wish l had bought the entire stock. Beats many single malts.

Cost less than £11 for 70cl in my local Tesco....unbelievable!
The best blended water of life that I have ever savoured.

3rd May 2018

Best Sotch ever.

This is the best Scotch I ever had . And I have had plenty.

1st April 2018

My dad was a Dewars Man....This gives me great memories of a great man...

Brought this home from California to Hawaii....Found this at a great wine-spirits shop in Costa Mesa- Hi Time Cellars. I drink single malt most of the time, but thought I'd have a blend around the house. This is excellent Whisky for the price. A little smoke at the end makes this a great surprise.... Aloha !!

23rd March 2018

Good blended 12 yo scotch, smooth, easy drinking and flavorsome.

Tried a bottle after reading the reviews and I'd say I wasn't disappointed. Not spectac

22nd March 2018

Speyside's style blended whisky

It's neither phenomenal or stunningly impressive! But it got all the ingredients a properly blended whisky must have! Delicate texture, fragrant flowery bouquet, smoothness on the palate and a decent aftertaste! Good flavour! Supremely great value! Can't ask for more. A masterful blending art of skills! Truly impressive!

11th March 2018

Excellent whiskey

Wow wow wow

20th February 2018

Big Dewars fan

What an improvement over the White Label! The oakey-smoky finish nailed it for me!

2nd February 2018

A fine blended scotch

Sweet, with a little bite to start. Meanders around the tongue lazily with a bit of an oaky hint. Overall smooth with a quick finish, and a nice deep earth aftertaste. Would recommend for this price point.

21st January 2018

A very pleasant surprise.

This, along with Monkey Shoulder, Famous Grouse, and Artist's Blend, is a staple in my "blend cabinet". Classic Speyside. I like it neat too, or with a little water. Very smooth and it mixes well. A bit like Artist's Blend, but less alcohol bite. Reasonably priced too.

4th December 2017

Real whisky? Yeah. I'll go with that.

I have a soft spot for Dewars. I like their style. I admire the fact that that they are unafraid of grain whiskies. And of course, there is actually nothing to be afraid of. The Ancestor is sweet, with a touch of bite, and it has the standard honey/vanilla/grass notes of Dewar's, but is has just a bit more malt, a bit more age, a bit more character than White label. I think of it as a cheap Royal Lochnagar for its straightforward nature. It doesn't pretend. And it doesn't have to.

29th November 2017

Whisky favorito en 12 años

24th October 2017

Definitely a step up from White Label

Nose: Malt, honey, banana

Palate: Silky honeyed malt, turning into citrus and then faintest hint of black pepper

Finish: Spices, an extremely brief kiss of peat, more malt, mint and spices as it fades

14th July 2017

Great Taste / Great Value

I drink all my Scotch neat. I drank Johnny Walker Black for years - and still enjoy when I can't get Dewar's 12. Dewar's 12 is my go to Scotch now for both flavor and value. I do not like Dewar's 15. I still enjoy Johnny Walker Gold.

2nd May 2017

Looks great

Just bought it as a gift :-)

12th April 2017

More to it than expected!

I'm rating this whisky based on both taste and price to reflect relative value.

An entirely inoffensive dram. Neat it is thin, but not without flavour. Hints of grainy vanilla, fruit and hazelnuts, with some honeycomb and a lingering light smoke.

A very easy to drink dram that makes a good session dram. For the money this is up against some decent blended malts or single malts. In all fairness, Dewards 12 is not out of place in that company and dependent on taste will measure up to or beyond many.

27th January 2017

Quite OK "go to"

Nose: Juicy, fresh fruit. Floral, malty, sweet.

Palate: Yes, it's perfectly poised with its different components, but it's not complex og not very interesting. It's thin, but very clean. A comfortable mouthful. Sweet, hint of smoke and oak and some honey and toffee. Aniseed spiciness and weak peppery spiciness.

Finish: Mild weak smoke, malty sweetness. Too short.

Some Aberfeldy here, but (for example) Aberfeldy 12 is a more interesting whisky than this one...

6th January 2017

Nice honey blend

You can't go wrong with this Dewers if you are looking for a nice every blend. It has good honey like sweetness to it. It is one of my go to blends and I always have it in my collection l

19th December 2016

5th December 2016

Classic. You can't go wrong.

I actually got a bit of syrup (maple or corn, not cane) at the nose after the first finger.
The finish isn't quite as long as I'd like....but for a blend, this is a standard go to & should be a home bar staple.
Not too smoky, which I prefer.

I've always had it neat, so can't speak for a splash or rocks. Good luck.

10th November 2016

Not bad at all

Some might criticize it for being too smooth, but as a vodka drinker, I rather enjoy it. The honeyed and floral profile fits my tastes just fine. Add a teaspoon of water and let it sit for a few minutes for some winey notes. Little to no burn. A decent introduction for beginners, maybe.

6th November 2016

the king of 12 !!!

Just Outstanding !!!

30th October 2016

I found my whisky

I just sampled my first Dewars 12 and I do believe my search for the perfect whisky is over.
Factor in the inexpensive price of Dewars 12 with its fantastic flavor and quality you come up with a virtually unbeatable whisky. I'll probably never buy another brand of scotch or bourbon after tasting this gold water of life. Lovely stuff!

13th September 2016

This is a very smooth Scotch. I loved it

11th September 2016

Good bang for your buck!

Picked up a liter today at Costco for $35. Could have got it for $30 if I bought 2. Tried it with a splash of water. Extremely smooth, nice subtle sweet flavor. Going to go buy 2 bottles tomorrow

23rd July 2016

Same as what the last guy said

Also a college student trying what I can get my hands on. Not picking up on all the notes/flavors described above, but I do really like it. Good, even flavor and smooth as hell.

10th July 2016

Not bad

I'm just a college kid who tries to get the best scotch I can afford. I'm a big fan of Johnnie Walker Black and loved Macallan 12 when I had a glass with my dad a while back. I got this on sale for 30 bucks in NC and find it pretty good. Goes down smooth. Not an overwhelming amount of flavor like some more expensive singles or blends buy still. Very smooth and flavorful for the price.

15th June 2016

Taste Good

I like it. But, what the hell do I know?

15th June 2016

Value for money

At less than 1000 baht in Thailand, this is a good deal. Smooth floral, vanilla, BBQ nose and a nice oily smoothness and typical taste.

15th May 2016

Blended vs Single

This is a solid scotch blend, I drink bourbon and single malts. ,This is smooth with underlying notes of fruit, honey, smokey, and very well balanced. A true Scotch and blenders art.

27th April 2016

very good

I drink it neat, can't be beat. Great value for the money.

12th April 2016

Subtle and complex, but not noteworthy. I wouldn't be able to say,"what a character, what ...". So, 3.5. Definitely a bargain dram though, and quite worth a try (hence the 3.5 and not just a 3)

4th March 2016

Better than you no

This should be sipped not slurped or gargled , preferably with a clean palate undiluted just on its own without mixers, ice or water. pour some in a glass hold it till it warms up and then enjoy. to be frank i have tasted quite a few so called single malts that could burn the paint off a gatepost. for what this is. a blend of good whiskies its great value and well worth a try.

9th February 2016

Very Nice Blended

Nice honey-orange color in Glencairn glass. Crisp balanced aroma. Malty but light on the palate. Finish is very smooth, touch of smoke and lingers just a tad. Exactly what I want from a blended scotch!

16th November 2015

Well crafted blend

This new packaging replaces the blue one. Nice floral nose with hints of vanilla and baked cookies/shortbread. The whisky is thick, creamy, honeyed sweetness, malt centric with no grain or harsh notes or burn. On the palate you get shortbread, vanilla, fruitiness with a nice balanced mouth feel and a whiff of pleasant smoke. The Aberfeldy shines through this and the finish is extremely pleasant. Overall a very well crafted blend.

30th June 2015

balanced, unique

this is the vintage version bottling...still quite the balanced, assertive yet mellow dram i am still impressed with. it's always good to step back and give the single malts a break...this is a good blend to cleanse and titillate the palate.

15th February 2015

Dewar's 12 Year on the rocks

I am rookie whiskey drinker - asked for mid-range scotch; rec'd 12 Yr and thoroughly enjoyed it. Excellent bar value.

7th February 2015

Nutty and vanilla, but overall kind of boring... I bought this on a whim after seeing the sale price. Not a bad whiskey for the price, that said, I would rather spend the money on a nicer whiskey. It competes with the like of Glenlivet in my book.

14th December 2014

12 year

This is the best blended scotch I have ever tried.

28th November 2014

Over priced at 45.96

I just bought a gift set for 26.99 at an ABC store in Florida. It contained a 750ml bottle and two very nice Dewar's Old Fashion glasses.
The is a very light blend that can stand just a splash soda or water.
I usually drink Chivas 12 and 18 or JW black when having a blend which have more flavor. But I'm putting version of Dewars on my go to list.

14th November 2014

Dewar's The Ancestor 12yr old

I bought a 1.75l bottle at Costco, on sale. I usually buy Dewars White label, which is good whisky. The Ancestor 12, is fine whisky. I just finished the bottle last nite, and am enroute for a couple more. This whisky is so smooth, I just couldn't believe it. It has a very pleasant taste, with excellent aftertaste on the palate. I drink all scotch neat, as I enjoy the taste. I have found Glenlivit 12 to be excellent also. I have tried Cuttysark, and while I like it, it is too harsh for me. It does not compare to The Ancestor or Glenlivit.

24th October 2014

Dewar's 12

This is a stunning blend, excellent balance, quite sweet, plenty of fruit with a bit of a honeycomb element I also get in Aberfeldy 12. The benefits from the double maturation are obvious as it is such a well rounded blend.

18th October 2014

Perfect per price vs taste performance

it is kind a great taste of agedmalt whisky i've rver tried. it is not a single but blended one ref to previous reviews. Therefore this is a 12 year aged whiskey which its taste is proper for whiskey lovers who accept long taste with smoked in barrels long.
By the way, for the big boys, single malt whiskeys shoul not be drunk on the rocks, just add chilly water on your whiskey if you can not drink straight strong whiskey ;)

28th June 2014

you all are NUTS

I found this to be fantastic! Especially for the price. I think all the bad or average reviews here are a reflection of people who still drink their scotch mixed. Become a big boy and drink it as ment Neat or on the rocks. It is great!

9th May 2014

I got a small sample of the 12yr old when I bought a bottle of the Dewars White Label. I actually like the White Label. It's cheap and goes down nice and smooth. Tried the 12yr old sample and I did not like it at all. I don't know how to describe it, it's just got a very strong alcohol bite with no real nice flavor. Smells like rubbing alcohol, lol. Glad I did not purchase a whole bottle of this. I like to drink my whisky neat and I think I'd have to add water to get any enjoyment out of this.

20th February 2014

Doesn't even taste like scotch!

I'm used to single malt scotch (Glenfiddich, Glenlivet, Oban, Ardbeg, Laphroig). I saw this in a Trader Joe's and thought I'd give it a try. I'm very disappointed and sorry I didn't buy a single malt. I'll never buy this one again.

24th January 2014

enjoy it

Great nutty flavor

31st December 2013

Loved it

I disagree with previous reviewers - fruity and sweet notes are nice and delicate, this Dewars is a masterpiece.

23rd May 2013

15th April 2013

I purchased this expecting something similar to the out-of-stock Special Reserve otherwise by the same name, and was disappointed. As the other reviewer said, fruity and sweet notes were quite weak.

1st March 2013

Although thick, the fruity and sweet notes are overrated by the site in my opinion. Heavy body, too much so I think. I nose a strong smoke, light fruit, and aniseed. The taste however is unbalanced with overwhelming barley, and only underrepresented notes of honey, fruit, and more rounded spice, which could have been better represented. Try a 10 year Dalmore ( for the price range , but anything really) , Johnnie walker swing, or anything Jura instead. I get the feeling more rare Dewar's bottling could be great, but that this is a variety meant to be sold by them name on the label.
