Founder J. Arthur Rackham spent more than five decades working in the booze business before creating his own Tennessee Whiskey, which is named after a moniker his daughter gave him. It's made with a mash bill of corn (80%), rye (10%) and malted barley (10%), the former coming from local farmers within 50 miles of the distillery. Once the milling of the grains has taken place a 72-hour sour mash follows, then double distillation. First in a copper column still, then in a second pot 'doubler' still.
As this is a Tennessee whiskey, The Lincoln County Process is employed, which entails filtering the spirit through maple charcoal staves. Rackham does things a little differently by employing a light second round of maple charcoal filtration to increase the smoothness. Once matured, Daddy Rack is bottled at 40% ABV with no additional colouring, caramel or flavours.
Vanilla pod earthiness, maple syrup and banana milkshake lead with red apples, fresh-cut grass, Kinder Bueno and toasted oak in support. In the backdrop, there’s melted salted butter, winter spice, cereal sweetness and peanut brittle.
Notes of candy floss, toffee popcorn, bruised apples and loose leaf tobacco appear initially, with sultanas, manuka honey and vanilla cola in support. Barrel char, green tea, oily espresso beans and sour cherry brings some nice bittersweet depth, with brown sugar, custard and chocolate-covered raisins joining them underneath. There’s a measured prickle of spice throughout from cinnamon and black pepper.
Spearmint, orange peel and some lingering nutmeg, milk chocolate and caramel elements.
Initial taste is very sharp. The taste improves once it starts melting in your mouth to a nice dark caramel taste but I just couldn't get past that initial nastiness.
I've been trying to get the missus into bourbon for ages, she wants to like them, but nothing I have floats her boat. So perusing the MoM site I came across Daddy Rack & from the other reviews decided to by a bottle. First pour I let the missus try as usual, fully expecting the usual response of, "quickly s**t in my mouth to take the taste away", but no a miracle, she loves it, tops up her Baileys for a little extra kick & even drinks it neat. Well done Daddy Rack a truly excellent whisky
Great taste and very enjoyable straight or with a ice cube or two. This is my second bottle and will not be the last.
Last year I was at the Whisky Show in London. I had sampled quite a few Bourbon’s by the time I found Daddy Rack. The guy behind the stall was so knowledgable and friendly. After a few samples my mind was made up that Daddy Rack was the bottle I took home at the end. This years show Daddy Rack unfortunately was not present. Because I would have loved to tell them how great it is. So this is the next best way. Cheers ?
One of the best whiskey I have tasted . It goes very well with my cigars . Also I stock and serve this in my cigar lounge in Tunbridge Wells Kent.(MAFFEI HOME OF HAVANA). It is so smooth and everybody that tastes it absolutely loves it. The perfect whiskey for anytime of the day . A brand that is worthy of its label.
