Cotswolds Single Malt

Very exciting stuff here, folks! This is the first single malt whisky from the Cotswolds Distillery (as well as being the first single malt whisky ever distilled in the Cotswold countryside!). A much-anticipated release, which has been produced using barley grown in the Cotswolds, distilled in their Forsyths copper pot stills (Mary & Janis) and aged in a combination of ex-bourbon and red wine casks. We've been eagerly awaiting this whisky, and we know plenty of you have been too!

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose The first thing you notice are spicy cereal notes, malt and porridge, then comes the fruit - orange peel and lemon. Grassy and floral flavours followed by marzipan.

Palate Beautiful texture, creamy and round, with sweet citrus fruit and black pepper.

Finish Good length. There’s vanilla custard and a lift of aromatic freshness that will make you want another sip.

Reviews for Cotswolds Single Malt Whisky
English whisky at its best
Enjoyed this one , especially at £26 . Thought I'd try as an alternative and was impressed. Love the prickly heat on the palate like a black peppery note and the creamy finish. Reminds me of a Penderyn madeira finish and the same ABV . Thumbs up to Cotswolds . Very outstanding.

It's not quite ready..
It drinks very young, unusually hot on the tongue. Difficult to appreciate or locate any flavours there might be hiding in the spirit. A drop of water does improve it VERY slightly, promising future though, non chill filtered is always appreciated 👍

No expert
Not a fan of smoke or peat, and for me, this is a REALLY drinkable drop. Soft, smooth, with very pleasant warm cuddle. In terms of flavour profile...don't know about tangerines, marzipan, or the waft of a unicorn fart, but I thought it was a hugely satisfying sipper.

Good for the price
The overwhelming aroma is tangerine and orange, along with a heavy barley hit. Behind that there's a strong almond note too.
This malt is not over agressive in the mouth however. Yes, there's a little tongue tingle of pepper for sure, but it's fruit forward with oodles of golden syrup mixed in. Very thick mouth feel too, feels super creamy which is rewarding to hold for some time.
Finish is medium, and a little one dimensional that creamy stewed fruit all the way we had earlier.

Shows good promise
Shows really good potential. Wears its 46% ABV and young age well. I liked the initial creaminess and the pepper. Maybe lacks a little depth but not something a bit of age will fix. I agree with others: it asks for another sip. Want to score it four but does get there….yet. I think it will.

It's very good.
Cracking stuff. The flavour profile couldn't be any more English - it's a big fruit cake, basically, with elements of honey, toffee, vanilla, spice and perhaps a little ginger zing to keep things exciting. It'll probably offend people who drink only the more austere, one-note Scottish whiskies but I'm sure it will delight anyone looking for a rounded, full-flavoured glass at a good price.

As good as any Scotch or Irish single malt
This was bought for me as a Christmas present. Did not realise at first it was an English whisky, but soon realised this was something special, as good as any Scotch or Irish whisky. I love the smooth somewhat sweet taste. The aroma suggests something almonds. I'm sold on this one!

Disappointing.
Disappointing. A triumph of marketing over substance. Too young by a good four years and a wild unbalanced spirit. I’m keeping mine for cocktails.

Pleasantly surprised!
Had a taste in their shop on Broadway high street and wasn’t expecting much, initial impression seemed like it was going the way I thought, pronounced burn, definitely young but then when the burn dissipated there was a lovely long finish, quite sweet but lots of spice, reminiscent of mince pies, little orange peel, vanilla, cola, smells like an old fashioned which isn’t a surprise given the bourbon barrels involved. Really not bad for a regular sipper at £30!

I was expecting better!
Read good reviews about this one, but after today's bottle kill I have to conclude that it was nice but not memorable. I didn't taste like a whisky circa 46% ABV and indeed I found little to excite on the nose and a mouthfeel that suggested the whisky that was subject to a certain amount of chill filtration. For me, this was a malt that was close in profile to Monkey Shoulder, except the latter is a better experience at the typical price point. Perhaps it is a reflection of the lack of years in maturation but I would suggest that the Cotswolds will be an entirely different whisky with at least 10 years in cask to make this a more pleasing presentation. At around £30 a bottle, I would be looking elsewhere. Good effort but ultimately, not a choice I will be repeating.
