This gloriously well-matured whisky right here is a 40 year old Caol Ila single malt, which has been independently bottled by Douglas Laing as part of its very appropriately-named Xtra Old Particular series. This one began life back in June 1979 and was left to age in a refill hogshead for four decades, before said cask was cracked open in November 2019. Just 232 bottles of this incredible Islay single malt were produced.
Redolent of the archetypal littoral, beach and sea-faring Islay style, with seaweed and damp driftwood to the fore. Mouth-puckeringly salted ahead of iodine, chimney soot and peated barley on its palate... All leading to a warmingly spiced, gently smoked finish.
