Bunnahabhain 12

The fantastic flagship from Bunnahabhain (pronounced boo-na-ha-ven), launched as the distillery's original single malt in 1979, this Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old. It is aged in a mixture of bourbon and sherry casks and, since a relaunch in 2010, has been bottled at a big 46.3% ABV without chill-filtration or additional colouring. Very impressive. Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old is unpeated, unlike most Islay whisky, but has a beautiful coastal quality complemented by its fruity, light, sweet and nutty character. It’s one of those whiskies that newcomers and enthusiasts alike appreciate.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose Fresh, sweet, and a little floral. There’s seaweed, rich malt, dried fruit, camphor, caramel, chocolate orange, and apple poached in cinnamon.

Palate Soft and supple with a nutty, sherried quality leading among vanilla, marmalade, sultanas, and a bright coastal element.

Finish Mochaccino, dried herbs, Christmas cake spice, and a balanced salty tang.

Reviews for Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old
Bunna 12 is nice!
Wow! First taste sent me back to the 80's, when I first started drinking proper Scotch. Back then I drank mostly Glenfiddich. It had no age statement (but is gwnerally guessed at 8yo). It tasted completely different to modern Glenfiddich 12.
First mouthful of Bunnahabhain 12, I thoughtI was drinking 1980s Glenfiddich. Glrious stuff!

Superb Winter warmer
This is a superb winter warmer whose nose, palate and finish complement each other well in my view. To me, the nose is well balanced with pastry crust, dried fruit, candy orange, and toffee apple. The palate follows on with hints of nuts, boozy marmalade and Christmas spices before finishing warmly with dried Winter spices and malt. A favourite on my list for winter.

Beautiful Islay malt
I wasn't impressed by the Toiteach a Dha but this 12 yo is outstanding. Smooth, flavourful- -I love all the Islay malts (and I've visited all 8 of the distilleries on the island) but this is now my favourite.

Enjoyed this. Tastes stronger than its modest Abv. Unpeated and well rounded

Quality stuff
Stuiredair was my first Bunna and I still prefer it, subjectively, over the 12. There are certain diifferences, and the 12 does have extra layers of complexity. The taste also continually improves couple of weeks after the first opening. Fruit, jam and vanilla on the nose with the touch of oak. Raisins and vanilla pudding on the palate and long, sweet finish. Great stuff.

Wonderful
I cracked open a bottle & actually wasn’t sure about it initially. Why ? I hadn’t tasted anything like it previously. This one really grew on me & a few weeks later & half way thro. the bottle…. WOW. Such a full bodied, unique single Islay malt with a very lingering pleasant palate. Now one of my faves.

I shouldn’t like it as much as I do!
Such a fun whisky that offers more than its humble price tag would suggest. Normally I gravitate towards the smoke but I can’t help but love this. Plenty of layers which open up one by one with patience. Once past the whack of sherry and Christmas cake, the spice ramps up and you get hot syrupy poached apple in cinnamon. A little time and the maritime elements come out to play, iodine, woody, barnacley old boats come to mind, the sweet spice becomes cola bottles and sour malty wash… and so on
