Port Charlotte 10yo

Introduced as the flagship Port Charlotte expression produced by Bruichladdich in 2018, this 10 year old single malt from the Isle of Islay is a lip-smackingly smoky number indeed. It's peated to 40ppm, and drawn from a combination of first-fill American whiskey casks, second-fill American whiskey casks and second-fill French wine casks.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose Salted caramel brownie, flamed orange peel, a hearty whack of seaweed.

Palate Oak-y smoke and salty sea air, paired with sweeter notes of Custard Cream biscuits and white grape.

Finish Ginger snaps, rye toast, drying peat smokiness.

Reviews for Port Charlotte 10 Year Old
Heavily peated?
This does not taste like heavily peated, not a criticism, can taste the wine influence,to me heavily peated is Mactalla Mara or Smokehead High Voltage, this is more subtle, maybe some affinities with Port Askaig 8 yr old, nice all the same.

Smoky goodness.
Surprisingly balanced for a 10yo - only a hint of roughness at the short finish that made me wish it'd had a tiny bit more time. Nice inviting nose with that charred orange, and a silky body that's full of peat and oak, but without the dry edge - would be a great way to introduce this style to someone new to whisky. There's a bit of biscuit warmth, but this isn't a sweet expression by any means, just nicely balanced. Good stuff, though left me wanting more body and a longer finish.

Beautifully balanced peat
Did a blind tasting against my other peaty favourite, the Laphroaig 10 sherry, and this came out tops. Similar nose to both of them but this was better with a lovely vanilla, honey palate coupled with a long sweet finish.

Excellent
This is an excellent example of the Port Charlotte range. Smooth but with a bite.

Moreish
I have just finished a bottle of this, and I will be replacing it very soon. After pouring I find in the first few sips a TCP taste hits me first, but after time in the glass I find that disappears and it becomes a smooth, tarry, smoky whisky. I find it very moreish, which is probably why the bottle didn't last long!

Tremendous Islay Whisky
You want peaty smoke, seaweed & citrus? You get it all, here. This is a monster of a dram, one to appreciate. Chewy neat, yet smooth with just a few drops of fresh, cool water. Definitely a bottle I'll be buying again!

Another Islay gem, maybe not quite up to Smokehead though
It is just like it says on the bottle, a smooth but peaty number, not overly peated or oily like some other Islay malts. Would definitely recommend to lovers of Islay whiskies.
