This is a Darkness! bottling of 6 year old Port Charlotte single malt Scotch whisky, finished in a very interesting cask - it was a specially coopered, 50 litre cask, made with staves from both Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso Sherry casks! The combination of well-peated malt and massive Sherry cask influence is pretty intense and very delicious indeed...
Nose: BBQ smoke, flamed orange peel, blue berry pancakes drenched in real maple syrup. A touch of smoked cheese, followed by toasted teacakes and thick cut marmalade.
Palate: Sweet, sticky Pedro Ximénez Sherry influence, swiftly followed by smoked meats and oily walnuts. Spearmint, date and blackberry notes appear on the mid-palate.
Finish: Fragrant smoke continues for ages, with a mixture of waxy peels and honey.

Very, very dirty. Engine oil, and a broken down ford cortina. The smoke is almost acrid, it's so intense, and the cask contributes some really filthy notes. This really is a divisive dram.

The cask influence here is massive - there's ashy peat, with sweet dates and honey lurking just behind it. The peat is somewhat drying, and there's certainly a bit of raw oak influence from the cask too, but this is balanced (in my view perfectly) by the sweetness.

I've reviewed this on whiskybase. Idea of hybrid cask is brilliant. Execution though, very, very poor. This is just very young, sharp and pretty undrinkable whisky. No cask influence what so ever taste wise. The cask added just some colour. No sherry influence on nose, taste or finish.Sorry chap at MoM, you've let me down big time. Won't go blind on your bottlings anymore.
