Bruichladdich Bere 2008 Bottling Note

A travel retail Bruichladdich single malt Scotch whisky, made with Bere barley, which has a much lower yield than other varieties. For the 2008 vintage Bere Barley Bruichladdich (a phrase which actually rolls off the tongue rather enjoyably), the barley was actually harvested on Orkney! From one island to another, all to make this light, sweet, refined expression.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Floral honeysuckle and fresh curd tart with plenty of vanilla cream. A touch of oak here and there.

Palate: A light, refreshing mouth feel with brown sugar, vanilla and lemon peels. Very subtle hints of sea breeze.

Finish: Clean, refreshing qualities continue through the finish.

Bruichladdich Bere Barley 2008 Reviews

Very tasty but over priced for what it is pt. II

I said previously that it doesn't taste young. I was incorrect. It is true that it isn't as punchy like a lot of young whiskeys can be, but it has a sharpness to it which can definitely be attributed to its age. Hate to say it but the more I try of this whisky the less impressed I am. I'd recommend just buying something else for a similar price, you will get, more likely than not, a better whisky. I loved both the Bruichladdich the classice laddie as well as the Port Charlotte, both excellent and both worth purchasing. This one just doesn't stand up to it's price.

Very tasty but over priced for what it is

A good whisky but with some caveats.

Positives: A nice, citrus nose which is very fresh and bright and a very good pre-cursor to the palate itself. The palate is bright but, despite this being a youthful whisky, does not have the harsh punch that is often associated with such whiskies. The finish is again bright and smooth and does last. It is very nice, very drinkable.

Negatives: I have a few issues with this whisky but the biggest one is price. It is, in my opinion, priced far higher than it should be for the whisky it contains. It reminds me in many ways of the Balvenie 12 American Oak version yet is priced close to double that - my suggestion would be to go for that because I can't see much of anything else you're getting in this whisky for the price. I'm also not convinced that the bere barley they use is anything more than a gimmick as, from what I can taste, there is nothing new or groundbreaking in this bottle. It is very tasty, I am enjoying it, but I do have reservations. The Hibiki Harmony is cheaper than this and, in my opinion, a more complex, much better whisky for the price. If you have the money and you're curious though go ahead, it is by no means a bad whisky.

Beautiful Whisky

Absolutely beautiful whisky. This is a completely different animal from the other Bruichladdich expressions. Especially noticeable when tasted side by side. Lovely.

One of my favourites

Sweet fruits, very round and soft in the mouth, yet also powerful and complex. Try with a drop of water for more flavour experiences! Just bought a new bottle, it still is widely available online.

Clean and crisp no-nonsense no-shenanigans whisky

Another great one from bruichladdich. Very affordable price wise and different from its peated series. Taste and complexity is among the easiest whisky to decipher. So easy that it is confusing at times due to the simplicity that this dram offers and yet is so good!

Complex and flavourful

One of the most complex malts I've had the pleasure of trying, from the nose, through the palate there is a complexity of flavours that tantalise your taste buds. The finish is long and satisfying. Each sip brings new experience. Then add a drop of water and then its whole nature changes and more complexity is uncovered. Underlying it all is the strength of spirit which reminds you of its potency. Each glass leaves you wanting more.

Sucker for an unusual malt

Having one, right now. Like it! You get a sense of the 'different' grain, which has an unusual, malty tang, right before the honey kicks in. If you're a whisky geek, you really should get one. If you're not, it's still very nice.
