Black Bottle Old Bottling Bottling Note

Black Bottle is a blended Scotch featuring a proportion of whisky from almost every distillery on Islay, a marked blend with plenty of character.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Rich and punchy, peat smoke wafting over plumes of fresh blossom and fruit... Something coastal.

Palate: Offers more peat, but this time a honeyed sweetness develops, fruitcake and oak.

Finish: Honeyed smoke clings 'til the last.

Overall: Enjoyable.

Black Bottle (Old Bottling) Reviews

I discovered a shop still selling this so I got five bottles. It's delicious. The new one has no character. This old style is too good to be true it really is.May even sell a few.

The old black bottle was the best blended whisky on the market, with a unique smooth, peaty flavour. In our pub " The Rising Sun ", which is in a village just outside Luton, Beds , we had a Black Bottle club, and we all loved our wee whisky sessions on the old Black Bottle. Not one member of our club likes the new Black Bottle, as it is now just a run of the mill, plain, dram crying out for a mixer. We are experimenting with Antiquary, Monkey Shoulder, and Chivas Regal, to establish what whisky takes the place of the old Black Bottle. It was definitely not a connoisseur who changed the whole ethos of this brand.

Love the new (new in whiskey terms) BB. Still smokey, nutmeg blah blah. Best blend on the market.

Bought the new version not knowing it had changed.
What a disappointment . Nothing like the old flavour and taste.
Bring back the old.

14th December 2015

Outstanding - Unique - why did they change it?

Old blend so much better than the new. Lovely smoke and fruit with a little bite.

16th April 2015

One of the best blends for the price

Great Islay and Speyside mix. Hard to find now.

14th January 2015

The older black bottle is much nicer then the new one. The blend of Islay malts is delicious. Please bring it back!

Sad news

Oh no! I was not aware that they have changed it but reading these reviews it sounds like a disaster. I loved this whisky, but so disappointed to learn of the change. I will not be searching out the 'new' bottling. Why oh why can't companies leave a winner alone?

1st December 2014

They haven't a clue.

It is hard to believe how this company could have got it so wrong. A beautiful and tasteful whiskey replaced with a perfumed and bitty drink that is so far removed from the original it beggars belief. Not only is the new drink awful but the bottle design is a close second in the mess that has been created for no good reason. It took me all my time to finish the only one that I have bought and will ever buy. Totally agree with the consensus b wiffen and others.

3rd June 2014

Insanity . . . . .

About as different from 'the New Bottling' as real Coca-Cola is from Cherry Coke. What on earth possesed Gramhams to replace the finest blended whisky on the market with something 'different'.

It seems its clear there is room in the market for both - now, can we have the original back????

24th May 2014

Makes you wonder

I loved this blend and just found two old bottles to put away (why I rated it high). The new blend is worthless and has no distinct characteristic. Apparently they went strictly for the mixer market.

9th May 2014

bruce wiffen

a whiskey that I have been enjoying for over 25 years now ruined the distinctive bottle has been changed to something that looks a glass flask but that is just cosmetic it is the contents that matterand here it is a disaster. No longer do you get that rich peaty taste it is now only light weight and no better than many other blends totol shame but I will not be buying the new blend

30th April 2014

Reminds me of all the bad whisky I have experienced

Aagh! Settling down with a new glass of Black Bottle and it's nothing like the stuff I had before. I go online and find they've messed with the blend. Horror. I may never finish the bottle I just opened and will never buy again.

27th March 2014

Black bottle no longer worth buying

A very good whisky now ruined and now no better than a bland supermarket own label . Will not be buying it again

drank black bottle for many years (62 years old now) would have liked to have had the original until i could't drink anymore.the new, too sweet, don't like the aroma or smell as i would have put it if i hadn't been interupted, as i was trying to wtite this. it was as good as it could be. why change things that work?

8th March 2014

why change it

Anywhere you go in Scotland this whisky is in virtually every establishment. This stuff is so good I prew it to most budget malts

22nd February 2014

End of an era !!!!

Have been drinking Black Bottle and collecting memorabilia for many years, have dozens of bottles ranging from very early to several "Jaz" specials, 10 & 15 year olds, etc.
By far the best blended whisky on the market !!!
So you can imagine my surprise, in November, when my wife presented me with a new bottle for our anniversary. At first I thought it was a special but soon discovered it is the new Design and more importantly, new ( back to original ) recipe.....
I'm trying hard to enjoy it but its just not the same, maybe I'll get used to it, but it seems its the "end of an era". :-(

17th January 2014

Best blend out there...

...and I would pick this over many single malts. Fantastic value and nowhere near as peaty as many would lead you to believe. A little splash of H2O as others have suggested and you won't regret it. Simply beautiful.

17th January 2014

@ MR HAROLD KITCHEN (and others!)

Indeed, the Islay blend we knew and loved has sadly gone, but in its place is a new blend that harks back to Black Bottle's 1879 roots. You can find the relaunched product here: - The Chaps at Master of Malt

7th January 2014

We have been drinking black bottle for many many years, but now the flavour is nothing like it use to be.
What has changed? We bought litre bttles of black bottle in gibraltar in june last year and it was just the same flavour as the old black bottle.
Why is it so different from what we get now in scotland ?

6th January 2014

Purchased a bottle about a year ago and loved the smokey peat flavor. Local liquor store suddenly began to carry it in mass quantities at a reduced price, so I bought another bottle a few weeks back. Very disappointed, not at all how I remembered it. As pointed out by others, quality has diminished, and I can only assume that this correlates with the boom in supply.

28th December 2013

Changes Afoot

This is Scotch Whisky man - not whiskey !!

16th December 2013

Not As it Was

This has changed, and to me it is not as good as it was. Its in a new true black bottle. Maybe when I am at the end of the bottle I will have changed my mind, but I dont think so

3rd December 2013

Cha-Cha-Cha -Changes

The quality of this product has diminished from a year ago when last purchased. The ratio of grain to malt has increased as the apparent quality and quantity of the malts within have diminished noticeably. Drinks hot and unbalanced.

3rd December 2013

One of New Favorite Blends

Smooth, easy drinking, but with complex flavours of peat, smoke and honey. A great dram for everyday.

7th November 2013

Changes afoot

Agree with 18th April the whiskey has lost what ever it had that made it a special taste for a blend. It now tastes thin and watery in comparison. I have been a regular, really regular drinker of this blend and feel let down over the last couple of months to what has been a truly special dram.

Fantastic surprise

Got this as a gift. Loved it. Great price, great blend - love the Islay.

Excellent value

Very good....could not recommend this blend more. You can get it in the states for under $20.00.

18th September 2013

Was recommended this by a pal that had visited Islay a few years ago. Found it in a shop in nottingham for the same price as it is here so thought I'd pick up a bottle. For easy drinking and a steal at the price. Thoroughly recommended.

proud family

I am gordon grahams daughter love that so mant people love this whisky the 10 year old is fantastic if you can find it happy drinking sarah graham x

30th May 2013

what's happened?

I used to love this but it has now changed into something unrecognisable from the bottles i used to buy. Colour used to be very pale but is now golden. The nose is quite dreadful. Tastes not much better with the famed smokiness now but a memory. Bitterly disappointed ..

18th April 2013

I seem to HATE blends. Single Malt simply does it for me but Im always open to new experiences so I tried black bottle and it is a very very good effort well balanced but needs a little more depth from the islay whiskys and then it would be untouchable and really BOLD

16th March 2013

Best Value Hands Down!!

With out a doubt the best value in Scotch bar none. Found two bottles for $17/per. Both bottles disappeared within a few weeks. I usually drink Whitehorse which is a very good Islay based inexpensive blend but Black Bottle is tastier and more complex for just a few dollars more. Hard to find but worth the search. Time for a road trip!

20th February 2013

I Love Black Bottle

Black Bottle is the best "cheap" blended Scotch around. I love the nice balance of Islay Malts and the smooth sweetness of the Grain. Sweet and smooth with a little smoke.

8th February 2013

Could be better

Was disappointed with this when i 1st tried. Thought it tasted too watered down. Was expecting a lot more depth from an islay blend. Then I woke the f*ck up & realised I only paid £16 for it. So for that it's pretty damn good. However, if you want a blend with a lot of depth and character, go for a big peat! Especially the Xmas edition! @andymcsween

8th January 2013

A blant issue

Maybe it was my bad luck to get over a flat batch of this blend but it was not really a tipple of my evening. Very strong grain whisky arrival only partially masked with peaty malts. A dissapointment - 80/100.

30th November 2012

Superb value

At this price point, nothing comes close. BB integrates nice peatiness with a floral sweetness. An easy drinker but still complex enough for thoughtful sipping. My main complaint is that it's a little thin - the word "full-bodied" doesn't come to mind when sampling this.

21st November 2012

Best value in scotch.

It's still a budget blend. It's only better than the worst single malts. But for the price it is really good. The best value in scotch for sure. It's got a wonderful range of flavors and satisfies the scotch connoisseur when he/she doesn't have the money to spring for the good stuff. Thank goodness for this well woven blend.

10th October 2012

Amazing value

Tremendous bargain for Islay lovers. Nice peatiness, with a fruity character. Great nose with some smokey notes. Hide the bottle and give this blind to your friends and they will think they are drinking something 3 times the price.

8th October 2012

A singular blend - Alan Lloyd Malta

Where else in the world will you find such blended craftsmanship? Black bottle is the ultimate whisky, a perfect blend of Scotland's finest spirit. Why spend four times the price for inferior single malts, or more for prestige blends. I have forsaken the Royal Salute Spode jar for the Black Bottle.

22nd September 2012

Good for the price.

Some smoke in the nose, the taste is grassy and vegetative, with a slight finish that is a little sweet and inoffensive. A very good value, especially when you just want to throw some blended scotch over some ice and call it a night. More interesting than The Famous Grouse. More balanced than Johnny Walker Red Label.

13th August 2012

Great value update

Oops should have given this 5 stars!!!

9th August 2012

Great value!

As someone who only drinks single or vatted malts I was only tempted to try this blend due to the reviews and the price. I wasn't disappointed.

9th August 2012

Amazing value beautiful blend

This is a truly beautiful blend slightly smoky, decent amount of peat, and very fresh and smooth, beautiful aftertaste. At £13 this is truly amazing value for money

18th June 2012

Superb blend.

Black Bottle rivals many malts in terms of its complexity and depth of flavour. The honey sweet arrival which develops into a warm smokiness reminds me of Highland Park 12 which is another favourite of mine. With a little water, the rubbery smoke on the nose changes to a much softer peaty note.

12th June 2012

12th January 2012

Black Bottle - An Absolute Bargain

Brilliant whisky for the price. Light, fresh, attractive nose. Smooth and easy drinking, sweet with a little peat in the background. Long finish with peat notes with honey and lasting sweetness. Brilliant.

19th December 2011

What a fantastic value

Just a terrific blend - smokey, peaty and sweet, and at around $20 an amazing value. This will be my everyday scotch I'm sure.

30th October 2011

Black Bottle by Pete Draper.

Been chasing Scottish whisky now for almost 30 years and eventually learned that all the best single malts are on Islay. So having tried all the island`s malt available I realised that the best whisky would be all of the island`s malts in one bottle. "Black Bottle" whisky is that whisky; the best whisky of all. Trust me !

26th August 2011

Black bottle

I was introduced to Black Bottle whilst on holiday in Wanlockhead. One of the best blended whisky's I have ever tasted. Smooth, rich, peaty and sweet.

7th May 2011

wrigleys flavour ;)

Blended whisky ?!?!?! Just - exceptional !!! Palate: my friend noticed sweet (old) yellow wrigleys flavour ;)

Mr Gordon Bell

I have tried many brands of whisky and have enjoyed most of them! However, the one whisky I keep coming back to, when I can get it (I live in deepest - darkest Staffordshire...), is Graham's Black Bottle.
I am not alone in appreciating this fine blend, as I have encouraged many friends and collegues to sample frequently.... and they all agree with me, this truly is a very good, high quality blended whisky.
Indeed my father, John Bell (butcher of this parish), won runner's up prize in a competition run by the distillery and won 6 very fine tumblers engraved with the whisky's label.
My father loved Black Bottle and instilled into me this love and appreciation of probably the most consistently good blends on the market.
I highly recommend this blend, as it is very easy to enjoy. It is not harsh on the throat and fills the mouth with a fabulous mixture of peaty, smokey, fruity, sweetness - a joy to enjoy!
So do yourself a flavour...I mean favour and buy a bottle today, your tongue will thank you for it!
By the way - the best way to enjoy this whisky, or any other blend for that matter, is to add a splash of water. But don't drown it! The master blender of any distillery would have your guts for garters if he saw you or anybody else, diluting away all his hard work by putting too much
H 2 O in his skillfully put together work of art!
