Black & Gold is a particularly snazzy bourbon which has enjoyed 11 years of maturation, allowing it to develop a rewarding, complex and overall excellent flavour profile. It was aged in slowly-charred barrels, and it was that charring that helped to introduce brilliantly bold notes of brown sugar, decadent vanilla and rich cigar box. As the bottle says, "Fire made it good". The casks were hand-selected, and it's fairly clear why they were picked - this bourbon is spectacular indeed. The bottle also happens to be incredibly handsome too, which is always a bonus.
Dense vanilla, toasted brown sugar atop apple pie, gingersnaps and cinnamon sticks.
Caramelised nuts, cask char leading to earthy cigar box and vanilla pod, with a touch of maple syrup hiding in there too.
Lasting oak and forest floor richness, well-balanced by toffee and chocolate sweetness.
Drinks much hotter than it's age and ABV. Vety sharp and lacks complexity.
I have a varied range of Bourbons on my shelves and will reach for a different bottle as my palette dictates - and while i'm no whiskey sommelier able to describe and dissect its flavours - to me. this bottle sits well among my woodford reserved double oaked and eagle rare 10 year.
Well he’s on to his second bottle and still loves it, not my taste but bought as a gift.
I bought this as it is an older bourbon and I have enjoyed a few with that deep flavour you get. This bourbon disappointed for what it seemed to promise. It is quite generic in its flavour profile and doesn't really have anything characteristics of its age. Not for me
It's a nice tipple
