A well-peated offering, this 13 year old single malt from Benriach has been finished in casks from the Portuguese island of Madeira, previously used to mature 'Henriques and Henriques' Madeira wine, part of a run of just 2,400 bottles.
Waves of peat, very full and robust. Touch of dark sweetness perhaps, darkly fruity.
Smoky peat and juicy fortified wine. A little dark sugar comes into the fold, something oaky as well. Shades of chocolate and honey are very well hidden.
Smooth with toasty vanilla and faint aniseed.
$33.05 - $161.92
My wife bought me a bottle of Ben Riach a couple of years ago as a surprise. I normally enjoy my Speysides, but had never had a Ben Riach. It was surprisingly good, which is why I now purchase my second bottle - and I am looking forward to it!
What a surprise! This amazing dram even beats the legendary Lagavulin 16 in my book. I've recently tried several expressions from BenRiach, they all were of great quality. A distillery to watch closely!
love it all the way
As an Islay fan I'm always wary of buying heavily peated malts from the mainland after a couple of disasters not naming names! But my goodness this malt is unlike anything else I've tasted. It comes in with a floral nose but with the underlying peat tone. On the palate it's Speyside characteristics with the Madeira finish come in but when you come to the finish you get a blast of serious peaty oaky smoke that lingers for ages which is unique and for the price I'm amazed. Well worth the money and shall be buying some more. Well done to Benriach!
