Named for the mysterious peat bog on the western side of Arran, the popular Machrie Moor single malt Scotch whiskies from the Arran distillery are peated, adding a core of earthy smokiness to their Island expressions. This is the 5th batch of Machrie Moor, which has been peated to 20ppm.
Nose: Light grassy notes rise alongside smoky, earthy peat. Hints of citrus, apple and pineapple (also seen in previous batches of Machrie Moor).
Palate: Biscuit-y malt, a little vanilla and lemon zest, surrounded by warm swirls of peat.
Finish: Peat lasts, as does the bright fruit notes.

Having been a fan of Arran whisky for quite a while, and usually opting for the 10 year old, I decided to pick up a bottle of Machrie Moor, as I've never had a peated whisky before, and thought it would be the ideal jumping off point. As with other Arran releases, it's a very sweet whisky, but not cloyingly so. There is enough citrus-like freshness to keep this lively. As noted above, it's peated to 20ppm, which seems to be enough to give a hint of smoke to the nose and taste, but it is in perfect balance with the fruity notes, and finishes with a touch of heat and smoke. There is almost a tea biscuit hint in this intriguing tipple. Having been to Arran several times, I can honestly say there's a mystique about the island, and this suits it perfectly. With this gentle introduction to peated whisky, I'm going to start exploring some of the Islays, but I'll always keep a bottle of Arran close by.
