Arran Boutique-y Batch 1 Bottling Note

This is the very first batch of delicious Isle of Arran single malt from That Boutique-y Whisky Company. It boasts a malt, almost coconut-like, coastal flavour and comes bearing a wonderful graphic-novel-style label of a scene from the island.

The scene depicts the artist, Emily Chappell, and a friend of hers on an ill-fated kayaking expedition - shipwrecked on the island and desperately flagging down the Waverley cruise ship which goes from Glasgow to Arran. The eagle in the foreground is a reference to the nesting eagles which postponed the distillery's build in the 1990s!

‘That Boutique-y Whisky Company’ bottles single malts, single grains, bourbons, blended malts and blends from a variety of renowned distilleries. These whiskies are adorned with cultish graphic-novel-style labels.

This is Batch 1, with a release of 211 numbered bottles.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Citrusy, slightly coastal nose with a crackling, spicy malt note.

Palate: Hints of desiccated coconut, buttery malt, digestive biscuits and a touch of orange zest too. Maybe a little dark chocolate developing late palate.

Finish: Ends on cocoa, sweet, tropical fruit and hint more malt.

Overall: Gorgeous stuff: creamy, malty and full of character.

Arran - Batch 1 (That Boutique-y Whisky Company) Reviews


The British retailer That Boutique-y Whisky Company recently introduced her first bottling of Arran, distilled at the Isle of Arran Distillery on, err, Arran. Like all bottles from TBWC, it has no age statement. But since Arran only started producing in 1995, this is 17 years at best, but most likely a bit younger. Arran themselves only introduced their 16 Year Old this year. Let us have a taste.

The nose offers mostly citrus and sweet malt. It even has some weird sauerkraut edge that I usually associate with Bunnahanbhain. Light hint of iodine. Quite some grain. Think vanilla cookies.

It is oily on the palate and the cookies return. But now they are spread with chocolate paste and pears (nice combo, you should try it). Orangettes as well. Zesty. Spciy. Nice salty lining towards the end.

The finish tries to balance sweet and salt, becomes creamy, but does not last very long.

A nice copy of a young Bunna, although that sounds a bit disrespectful. It carries a price tag of around 50 EUR.
