Darkness! Ardbeg 23 YO

Peat and Sherry is a combination that not everybody loves, but when it works... Wow. Also, if you subscribe to the formula 'one yummy thing + another yummy thing = a super yummy thing!' then this may well be nirvana. The casks used are specially rebuilt 50 litre fresh first fill Sherry, providing lots of influence in just a few short months. The last Darkness! Ardbeg was finished in a PX cask, now it's Oloroso's turn...

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose Honey Cheerios and Frazzles! Creamy peaty custard develops, brownies, slightly medicinal but the buttery, chocolatey goodness keeps that just beneath the surface.

Palate Here comes the Darkness! Dark, concentrated dried fruit and Sherried oak with Brazil nuts near a smoke house - perfectly integrated dark Oloroso and sooty smoke notes.

Finish Subdued for just a moment... then never ending smoked cheese and burnt ends. Just gorgeous.

Overall Stunning stuff. A journey in a glass that brings a smile to your face.

Reviews for Darkness! Ardbeg 23 Year Old Oloroso Cask Finish
Boom
Hugely rich, with a strange, almost mineral-esque quality to it too. Unctuous, decadent, and incredibly moreish.

Probably the best I've had
I was so intrigued by this concept (ardbeg + sherry = yes please) that I went ahead and bought a bottle... and boy am I glad I did! This is completely different than anything else I've had. Very complex, definitely not what I would call subtle, but it is nuanced. I really like the standard arbeg line, but this was really something else. I'm going to have to really savor this...

Wow
This in an incredible whisky. I've never had a peated & sherried one before (I enjoy both types) and this is certainly an eye-opener. Very smooth and complex. I was tasting it alongside Talisker 18, which is a fine whisky but seems bland in comparison with this wonderful Ardbeg. I'm glad I got a sample before they ran out!
