Ardbeg Wee Beastie 5yo Bottling Note

Ardbeg's Wee Beastie is a youthful single malt drawn from a combination of ex-bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks, bottled up at five years of age. Peaty notes sit at the fore for this one, with oak somewhat taking a back seat, since... Well, y'know, it didn't stay inside those casks for too long. However, don't mistake that for meaning Wee Beastie is an uncomplex expression. It still packs a satisfying flavour profile that should impress many of the Ardbeg aficionados out there.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: There’s sea spray, rock pools, smoked malt and damp bonfire wood initially which waves of sweet and slightly vegetal smoke powers through. Hints of brown sugar, pear drops, a little vanilla and cooked apple add sweetness among notes of spare ribs, lemon sherbet, black pepper and wood shavings. I love this nose, it’s smoky and musty and like standing by a seaside bonfire.

Palate: The palate is very pleasantly sweet and salty. Citrus oils and orchard fruits are present along with an unmistakable dark berry tartness which is joined by plenty of damp peat and dry wood smoke. Adding depth there’s pepper steak, creosote and then some touches of clove and liquorice. In the back-end, there’s a juicy sweetness from lychee and peaches as well as just a touch of salted caramel.

Finish: The finish is exceptionally long and oily. It’s a bit like sucking on a lemon sherbet and taking a great big whiff of some freshly cut peat, to be honest. While standing on a beach. Lovely.

Ardbeg Wee Beastie 5 Year Old Reviews

Absolute banger of a dram

I got this as I had already tried the 10yo and uigeadail. Absolutely loved it. Definitely my favourite out of the three. Very similar to Lagavulin 16 (my top pick) which if you don't want to pay out for it, the wee beastie would be best next choice!

Worth every penny and then some.

Forget about the the snobs reviews if you have any sort of a palate then you will truly appreciate this for what it is. There's not much out there at 5 years that can stand up to this. I won't go into notes as I don't need to explore it for yourself. Very good young raw whisky.

Hits my spot just fine.

Not a connoisseur. My fave is Lag16. This isn't there. But I like it. I'll drink it again.

Tastes like raw happiness

I love this expression of ardbeg. It is admittedly raw and primal and not refined like the 10 but I truly think thats one of my most favorite qualities of the wee beastie. I could drink this always ! I think those who dislike it generally expect something more out of something so simple. Enjoy it for what it is ,a young smokey flavor bomb that is simple and feral without a ton of complexity. I love this stuff!!!

It's a no from me.

Rough as a badgers erse! I love Ardberg but this is a million miles away from their standard 10 year old (if you want to use that as a benchmark). Harsh, flavourless and unsatisfying.

Ardbeggy

I really enjoyed this, but I'm an Ardbeg fan. Need try it side by side with the 10 before it all goes.

I love it

I love it, it's cheeky, it's fun as its name suggests.

A rare miss from Ardbeg

This is a rare miss from Ardbeg. I’ve never before had something from Ardbeg that I didn’t love but this is not a good dram. The smoke is there but almost nothing else is, except for a touch of burnt plastic and sulphur.
