Aberlour's A'Bunadh series has reached its 54th batch! As ever, this excellent Highland single malt has been drawn in Spanish Oloroso Sherry butts and bottled at cask strength - this time weighing in a 60.7% ABV. Stunning stuff.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Raisins, dark chocolate and a little hint of black cherry.

Palate: A barrel full of chocolate oranges, with touches of ginger and more dark fruit.

Finish: A lingering zestiness of orange oil with a spicy kick of cinnamon.

Overall: Top quality Sherried single malt. Add a drop of water to bring out more of the fruit notes.

A sophisticated dram

I'm really impressed by this. Massive blast of sherry and cherries on the nose, strong notes of cinnamon and pepper on the tongue with just the right amount of kick, balanced by sweetness and so smooth that I can't believe it is over 60% proof. No need to add water, it's perfect as is.

Massive flavor

Heavy dark fruit nose with hints of sherry. Palate brings flavors of black cherry, raisins, pepper and leather. Exceptionally long finish with spice, licorice and oak lingering on the palate for minutes. Delicious.

this batch is very fruity

A'Bunadh is one of my most favorite scotches. I've tried Batches 51, 53, 55, 58, and now am just trying 54. While each batch carries a common characteristic, most notably found in the sherried aspects, each batch certainty has it's own different nuances and it's fun to explore across the various batches to discover the differences. So what about this one? Well I certainly have to agree with the note descriptions above - there's a noticeable amount of chocolate orange in this batch resulting in a more fruity balance compared to some of the other 50's batches. I did also note even before reading the notes the subtle under-gird of cinnamon. Of course the strong sherried note is there in its usual prominence resulting in that fantastic A'Bunadh sherry characteristic. Overall it's a wonderfully pleasant batch full of complexity and well worth the spend. A'Bunadh really does represent great value for any scotch drinker who carries a fondness for a sherried dram. It's a hard one to beat in it's price range and on that count I find it a great point of reference when trying other sherried scotches as well due to the complexity it offers compared to many others. I also encourage adding water as it allows the flavours to develop considerably and the true fuller flavour aspects and nuances to be experienced. It's important to note it's not about strength but subtleties under these circumstance of which the water allows that to be released and experienced in all its A'Bunadh glory. I typically bring mine down to around 40 to 45 % but each to their own and it's also a fun part of the experience to try at different strengths to see how the palate responds. Enjoy, it won't disappoint :)

My first Abelour of any expression. Loved the creamy first impression. Despite all the fruity descriptions of others, it isn't that sweet. If only quality cigars were still a part of the experience!

Why did it take me so long to try this?!

Ok so I was in Scotland a couple weeks ago and while driving around Speyside drove through the village of Aberlour and right past the distillery and I thought to myself I really need to try an A'bunadhsince all I've had from them is the 12 year. So this is the first bottle I have bought since returning from an amazing trip and it kinda brings me back there. Needs a little water since it is so strong but the flavors here are off the charts so much nutty,fruity, spicy goodness I could go on all day. This is honestly a little better than Glenfarclas 105 pretty similar but this is just a little tastier and smoother. Truly superb best thing I have had from this distillery and it's too bad I didn't have time to stop in for a dram(can say this about at least 20 other distilleries too) . Next time I will for sure. Very happy with this the hype is deserved. Cheers! The sugarbear

Cask strength with a long kick

This is my first experience tasting/buying a whisky from Aberlour. It does not disappoint. Reminds me a little of the Macallan 10 years single cask - although not as warm. It has a semi long aftertaste where youcan taste the nuances of the oak and sherry and yes chocolate. It is not as sweet as other sherry barrels. Although it needs a drop of water it really surprises you and makes you want more. Pure genius

Gullet friendly.

Smooth as smooth can be. Not a bite in sight. As it slipped down my gullet, I honestly couldn't discern that it weighed in at just over 60% ABV.

Best yet?

Wow. You have to take a few glasses out of the bottle before this fully opens up. Where the 53 had spiciness and youthfulness, this is spicy and mature, with a smoothness that doesn't typically go with a cask-strength NAS whisky. I've had batches 46, 47, 49, 50, and 53, and this may be the best. It's sherry impact is dry like a GlenDronach 15, but with the punchiness (high ABV) you expect from an A'Bunadh. Just as I've come to love the sweet, youthful grape of Batch 50, I'm enamored with this Batch 54. How long can Aberlour keep this up? Hopefully, forever.

Promising deep dark (not that dark) nose, graphite beginnings (why did this come to mind?!) and then steeped in oak balancing fruit, smoothly bites, comes back for more....

Quite spicy with lots of Oak!

A real sherry bomb on the nose but the pallet is too spicy. Almost like a Woodford Double wood. if you are into strong Oak taste and sherry spice, this is for you..

It snuck up and bashed me.

Not that impressed initially. I felt it lacked the quality of the 53. Silly me. Like a virus it grew on me and now I'm smitten. Big flavour, big kick. A healthy splash of water reveals all its subtleties. God help my liver, but what a way to go.

Simply Delicious

A bit too strong for me to drink it neat. Adding a small block of ice or a teaspoon of water made it deliciously creamy and opened up more flavors, very smooth, and I like this batch 54 more than the Glenlivet 16 Nadurra cask strength.

As a seasoned Abunadh drinker, it doesn't get any better. Quite simply, older whisky IMO, more balanced and refined than all others I've tried (38,40,45,47,49,50,51). Its perfect, no other word.
