The fantastic and always popular Aberlour 12 Year Old, matured in both traditional oak and sherry casks, now bottled at 40% abv.
Look, I'm a whisky drinker. Not a whisky taster. OK? Expensive malts are interesting, talking waffle about how you are getting 'toasted cinnamon waffles on the nose' is fun. But I'll level with you; every time I open a bottle of Aberlour 12 and, without guilt, pour out a large glass, it makes me wonder why I ever bother with anything more expensive? This is the sweet spot for an affordable malt with bags of flavour that I can happily drink all night. It's a delicious sherry cask.
One of my favourites
Yes, there are plenty of more expensive single malts that bring more depth and complexity to the table. Despite that, Aberlour 12 year old double cask matured makes a skilfully crafted product. Very easy and smooth due to its inherent Speyside sweetness and 40 vol-% strength. I enjoy this very much lean together with some chili nuts as they add character and edge to the overall experience.
Disappointing. Maybe I don't like sherry cask scotch. It does have a malty taste but not much of a finish. I wasn't getting all those flavours I hear others mention. Even though it is "just" 40% it still was a bit hot. I really wanted to like this.
At this price it can't be beat. A well balanced malt that more than holds it own with any. One of my favorites.
