2006 Vintage Whisky

Whisky and pluto isn’t a planet

The year 2006 saw North Korea's first nuclear test and the reclassification of Pluto as a dwarf planet.

In the whisky world, Bruichladdich’s Octomore series took peat to a new level, with its first release becoming the most heavily peated whisky at that time. The experiment was a resounding success, appealing to those looking for extreme flavor profiles. Meanwhile, Glenfarclas released their Family Casks series, a collection of vintage-dated whiskies that allowed enthusiasts to pick a year meaningful to them.

Independent bottlers such as Berry Bros & Rudd maintained their standard of excellence with releases like the Blue Hanger 4th Release, which garnered attention for its complexity and balance. Bottler Blackadder also gained prominence with their Raw Cask series, where bottles contain small particles of cask wood and charcoal to maintain a rustic, unfiltered character. The year 2006 displayed the whisky industry’s resilience and innovation, even as the world outside was fraught with challenges.
