The legendary Macallan Distillery has achieved something extraordinary with this jaw-dropping bottling – it has released its oldest ever whisky, which is really saying something when you remember that it has previously bottled up whiskies over 70 years old.

The Reach, however, goes further than ever before. This is an 81 year old single malt Scotch whisky, drawn from a single sherry-seasoned cask that was laid down in 1940. Yes, you read that correctly. This expression has spent over eight decades maturing at The Macallan's home in Speyside, allowing its flavour profile ample time (to say the least) to develop. A truly astonishing feat, one that very few distilleries would be able to accomplish. Only 288 decanters have been produced.

A whisky of this magnitude deserves a unique presentation, and The Macallan has pulled out all the stops for The Reach. The stunning decanter is set upon a bronze structure of three hands, which represent three people that have helped to create Macallan's legacy – namely Kirsteen Campbell (the master whisky maker behind this release), Allan Shiach (former chairman of The Macallan, and grandson of Dr. Allan Shiach who ran the distillery in 1940), and the distillery workers of 1940. The sculpture is housed in a cabinet made with wood from a fallen elm tree thought to have been on the Macallan Estate in 1940.
