Guillermo Sauza's family have a rich Tequila-making history, with Don Cenobio a key figure in establishing Tequila as we understand it today. When Guillermo was little, his grandfather sold the company, however, dashing his chances of growing up to become a jet-setting mariachi band brand ambassador for the family's spirits (this is all true by the way). They held on to the distillery and land though, and Guillermo was able to get the traditional distillery (deemed too "inefficient" and old fashioned in the 1960s) back up and running, launching Fortaleza in 2005.
Everything a good tequila should be with herbaceous, vegetal agave, citrus, green olives and brine as well as a creaminess that carries into rich buttery character.
Traditionally made, in all senses, and you can taste the difference. If you're going to make cocktails, buy G4 - it's very good. If you like tequila straight though, treat yourself and buy this.
Very very smooth and made with small batch traditional processes. Features in the Rick Stein Mexico TV show.
Just got this as a Xmas gift as I thought I’d like to give it try( having watched “queen of the south” and seen them knocking it back neat. This is a sipping nectar my new fave drink. Treat it like a good malt whisky or brandy savour the flavours- enjoy
If you wanted to sample the world of super premium all genuine tequilas and then drank nothing but the Fortaleza range, ironically you would have done pretty well. They capture everything that great tequila should be without the need for flashy marketing, vast productions runs or modern methods. If someone asks me where they should start I always say "Jump 5 places and Go directly to Fortaleza", you won't have missed much and you'll be very happy indeed. Enjoy!
I brought the original “los abuelos” version back from Mexico in 2008. I found the bottle recently and was overjoyed. A smooth tequila with no burn, expect notes of caramel and vanilla with a peppery finish. I bought for $10 but it’s easily worth the price here. You won’t regret it!
$35.63 - $128.18
