Wood's 100 Navy Rum Bottling Note

Wood's is made from the finest sugar cane and distilled in Guyana, South America. Bottled at 57% abv, it is one of the highest percentage volume dark rums out there right now, at least at this price.

Its smooth enough to enjoy neat, but also a killer choice for cocktails.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Toffee, cinnamon, cloves and pepper spice on the nose with thick caramel notes.

Palate: Muscovado sugar, soft toffee and just a hint of the spice detected on the nose. This is very smooth, belying its hefty abv.

Finish: Surprisingly short but thick and syrupy toffee notes abound.

Overall: A rich, dark rum with a high abv that retains its smoothness. Would work well in a dark and stormy, despite the fact Wood's is distilled in Guyana, and not Bermuda.

It's proper rum

Once you've drunk Woods, anything else is inferior

Woody's rum is always my first choice of drink and has been for 25yrs.
Straight or with a splash of coke but never with ice and a slice.
Whenever I go into an unfamiliar bar my first question is always "do you sell Woods? Once you've had this anything else is inferior

9th November 2019

If you ain't drinking Woods, you ain't drinking rum

There is not a rum on earth to match it, or that comes anywhere near it for taste. Real beauty.

22nd September 2019

A tot of this and you will eat the kitchen table

The favoured drink of rum rats in the mob especially after the demise of the tot, the old bottle was iconic the new one bland and dismal. Hopefully they haven’t messed about with the contents.

Keep a Bottle of This on the Shelf at All Times

I bought this on a whim, and what a whim. My family are all rum drinkers, but stick mainly to bundaberg and mainly bogan rums. I gave them this, and for the weaker ones, with some ginger beer. They loved it! Which I hated, now I have to share it. This is definitely one to keep in stick at all times.

Is there a better Rum?

Had it for the first time yesterday at a Brit friends house. My favorite Goslings Bermuda has turned into a very distant third after, first Woods 100, second Captain Morgan’s Jamaica. Neither of which seems to be available here. Spoiled forever.

Smooth toffee and molasses flavour makes it a pleasure to drink neat or with a mixer.

Ive been drinking this rum since 1975 when I was serving in the Royal Marines. We traditionally drank it on 21 October to celebrate the Battle of Trafalgar and on the 28 October to commemorate the Royal Marines.
To me it is the best tasting rum available. It makes other rums, especially one from Queensland taste like rough homebrew.
At 100 proof it packs a punch. One sip is all it takes to realise why pirates talked the way they did. Oooaarrh

26th December 2018

Amazing value

As whisky prices go up and up, consider this beauty - 25 quid for a spirit approaching cask strength - it is sippable, very strong on licorice and treacle but it has integrity and genuine value for money!

28th November 2018

A non drinkers weapon of choice.

Im not a drinker, dont like beer, dont like cider, dont like vodka. Tried a rum and coke once and found I quite liked it. I was cooking recently and needed some rum, strong rum, not the usual 35% stuff. I picked up a bottle of this and now I cant put it down!

27th November 2018

perfect Rum

I think this is possibly the finest rum I have tasted , it’s smooth rich taste has just the right balance of spice and toffee flavours and the high abc adds just the right balance to a pretty ne’er perfect drink

Woods 100 Navy Rum

My favoured spirit is rum. I have drunk many. Pussers, Gosling, even Hicks 120 ( which, albeit a tad expensive, unless you buy multiples, is, at 71.5% one of the strongest in the UK ) , but for general use, I believe you need to go a long way to better Woods. Much has been said of mixing with cola & ice. Stuff! This is a Navy rum. Drink it in a Navy manner. 2:1 with chilled spring water - straight down! Job on. Splice the mainbrace!

12th November 2018

Dantastic!

WOW! Burns the nostril hairs. Along with Pussers this is one of the vest rums. (Oct 2018 Saibsburys £22ish).

3rd November 2018

The Real McCoy!

I have drunk anything and everything (except meths, aftershave and boot polish) for the past 60 years. Recently my favourite tipples have been John Smith's bitter and Jameson whiskey, but I have packed them in since being introdued to Woods Old Navy Rum. This is the real McCoy and my only regret is that I didn't know about it years ago. Best deal at the moment (Oct 2018) is £22.50 per bottle at Sainsbury's. A bargain at that price!

16th October 2018

Powerful taste and great value

Wow, this stuff is amazing. I love sipping this. Strong flavours ... yes, like everyone say Xmas Pudding, some burnt caramel and it kind of fizzes in your mouth.

8th October 2018

Beautiful dark rum.

This is a beautiful, full flavoured, dark rum. Toffee and muscavado sugar are predominate flavours.
Lovely.

18th August 2018

Woods versus Pussers smoothness caramel fruity nose Pussers anyday.

Tried it but only enjoyed it with Amontillado sherry for the wood with a dash of lemonade we called it a Zoony. This was after we had our got stolen, but to drink as a tot no comparison to Pussers, no need to spoil it with cola or other soft drink, a splash of water. Pussers anyday.

5th August 2018

A lovely drop

Finally got around to trying this, the bottle was on special offer and I didn't hesitate.
With such a high percentage it packs a punch yet is still wonderfully smooth. Wasn't keen when mixed, I prefer this as a sipper.

29th July 2018

Woods Rum perfection in a bottle .

Woods Rum is the best rum I have ever tasted , I drink it on the rocks with a splash of water , perfection .

30th June 2018

Wonderful

I was given this as a birthday present and I absolutely love it. It has become my favourite and even my husband who is an avid fan of Bacardi Gold has been helping himself to my bottle! This rum will now take first place in my cupboard. I love the smooth rich taste and the smell is divine ..... what rum should be about.

6th June 2018

Terrible

Looks good on paper doesn’t it? The reality is somewhat different. Rough, rough hurried distilliation makes for a very unhappy punter. Avoid if you like a quality, considered drink. Buy if your a cheap ass looking to get drunk quickly and don’t care about quality. Honest opinion

27th May 2018

A Lovely Tot

A lovely tot, everything I expected it would be. I've tried Pussers in the past and had always wanted to try this but was I was always put off by the high strength. Eventually I plucked up the courage and was not disappointed. I got lots of blackcurrant and demerara sugar. Nice enough neat but works well with cola.

21st May 2018

Worth treating youreslf.

Beautiful an very smooth taste 11/10

11th May 2018

Updated Post

Ok - um...Woods is nice...but the taste of Pussers is kinda better...i tried it with the grog mix too...and coke...er, sticking to the 4 rating...cos that gunpowder pussers just rocked my world...honest - get it on ya wish list...lol.

1st May 2018

First Taste In Years

The rating is cos I am just about to drink this...I remember it from MANY years ago...am also gonna try it with Pussers Grog mix...cos I have some left... - on the nose it doesn't have the depth of Pussers...but let's see how it stands up :)

Take your time with this one

Fantastic stuff , had some bought me for Christmas along with some vodka and whiskey. I can understand some people drinking it neat but not me , good with ice or cola or both , even at 50_50 still plenty of kick , in a friendly sort of way. Smooth and warming. Economical , nice to have some on hand , I like the bottle , ohh forgot to mention the taste , top quality rum rum rum.

24th February 2018

The best

One of the best,i have tried many but find this suits me just fine, and if you dont like it send it to me and i will drink it for you to help you out Cheers

21st January 2018

Nice drop of splush

Original & best. A fair price for such quality and makes the ordinary brands like seem fit for cooking use only.

Lovely new bottle.

Top tip - my WW1 Granddad used to add some to his coffee. Nice added to a thermos of coffee for a winter walk.

I'm gradually going off Malt Whisky, my last Ardbeg was £45! Even a good whisky is harsh compared to Woods.

23rd December 2017

Don't worry about the shape of the bottle

It's what is in it that matters. The best rum you could wish to have.I have been enjoying it for many years buy some and enjoy

15th November 2017

it's strong alright

Ive drunk many higher abv than normal spirits but this just grabbed me by the throat and said 'you knew what you were getting into sucker', having me reaching for my glass of water to ease the burn. It was only when i added more water than i usually do to rum's of this % and let it open up, that it's flavour started to appear and it played ball, and it's a wonderful player at that. If i had a choice id go for pussers gunpowder proof, but I'm sure the purists and old sea dogs appreciate the initial hit a tad more than i do.

8th October 2017

More of an experience than a drink

Incredible stuff. Even the initial 'hit' is complex. Then it moves all over the place: at times sweet, at times hot, at times bitter like you're chewing bark from some green sapling. And afterwards it stays with you for ages. Not a dram to rush. Also worth trying in a Zombie instead of a 151 where it seems to add exponentially to the pungency of the brew making the cocktail feel more potent than any 75 percenter does. Full of character - a true one off.

30th September 2017

Woods then and now

I was made to drink this when I joined Ark Royal in 1971. The tot had just been withdrawn. We had up spirits in the Avondale pub at 1200. The whole watch trooped over to get it. The taste was too subtle for a 17 year old. I always liked the look of the old bottle with the matelot on it. I have occasional tot of Woods now and then. I now fully appreciate it.

30th September 2017

Run taster

This is a RUM.To describe it is pointless.Just to say a night in with a bottle of this rum is what drinking rum is all about. WONDERFUL.

29th September 2017

All power to Woods

Loving the new 'fat' bottles. Don't see what the problem is. It's a fantastic rum that deserves recognition and if that's the distinction the market needs to recognise it then so be it. My new go-to dark rum, hands down.

12th September 2017

Great rum, poor bottle!

After 50 years of drinking Navy Rum, I have to agree that Woods is in a (high) class of it's own - as I take it for refreshment rather than punishment, I dilute it considerably using a 15ml measure of rum in a highball glass of Coca Cola, with a slice of frozen orange from the stock in our freezer. This 'cocktail' provides me with an excellent nightcap, and although 'lower octane' mainstream rums are cheaper to buy, a bottle of Woods lasts much longer and therefore more economical - the wonderful flavour is a massive bonus! My only complaint is the new bottle which takes up too much shelf space and looks downmarket - for me, the absence of a 15ml cap is a great disappointment too!

28th April 2017

New bottle is CRAP !!!

Been drinking this rum for 55 years. Only gripe is the new bottle - it is crap!! Label looks cheap, bottle not easy to open, especially for us oldies. Two local pubs have to decant the "Woods" into old bottles as they do not have room to put new bottles on the optics rack. Give us the old bottle and label back. Whoever designed the new bottle and label should be keel hauled,if he survives, fine him and sack him.!!!!!! Tony Stanyer.

20th April 2017

Excellent in quality and effect and gives great satisfaction.

Real quality Rum the best I've ever found, I can't add to the caramel notes, just a hint of spice, and syrupy notes as that would make me as daft as a wine buff that dream these sayings up to look good when they don't know what they are talking about. I drink Rum because I like it I like the taste of Wood's Old Navy Rum and also the effects it has like putting me to sleep at night and funnily enough no hangover in the morning, I even like the bottle .

13th April 2017

Very good value for a quality rum.

Georgeous smooth rich tasting rum.

18th March 2017

Best rum ever

Definitely the best rum in the world,, don't like drinking any of the others, just a shame about the new label, makes it look like a Chinese rip off. I think the makers should go back to the old label and bottle shape for that matter.

13th February 2017

Change the bottle!!!

Been drinking "Wood's" a long time now.New bottle and design of label has taken it down a few notches! Bottle is not easy to hold, cork and plastic wrap is hard work for us oldies, label is like a cheap whiskey as opposed to the original label which looked as though some design and thought had gone in to it! Two local pubs have to decant the rum in to old bottles because they do not have room on their optics. Give us back the old bottles or I am giving up buying the stuff after 56 years. I'll start drinking beer and whiskey again. Tony Stanyer.

26th January 2017

Mr Noel Hood

I have just got a bottle for my birthday I will saver it , really nice very strong perfect

14th December 2016

Ex Joss Man

Love the stuff, nearest thing I have tasted to proper pussers rum. Remember when we had a memorial burying of a casket of pussers rum on the last day of issue. Very ceremonial. Marked with headstone etc. Next morning it had been dug up and never seen again. Don't blame the culprits - what a waste of good rum.

5th December 2016

Leg less

I'm a big whisky drinker and decided to pick this up a couple of weeks ago, I had 3 big glasses and lost the ability to stand. It's muscavado sugar tasting goodness is delicious and deadly if you hit it too hard :)

31st October 2016

While I think Woods Rum is the best rum in the World, I must voice my disappointment at the new label.
I began drinking Woods while serving in the Royal Navy in the 60/70s, and the Sailor on the label always made the bottle stand out on a crowded shelf. Now living in Australia, I treat every bottle of Woods like liquid gold, but would like to see the return of the old label.

it's a big burnt Christmas pudding in a glass, it's awesome and I love it.

28th June 2016

18th May 2016

Fine..... You have to handle this drink with care.... 57% . Demerara rum is the best, this reminds me of Old Sam... Its another great black rum.

6th January 2016

mrs

my dad is a woods rum lover he gets us all to buy woods rum for Christmas birthdays anniversaries & fathers day so he has his years supply he's been drinking it for as long as I remember I am in my fifties so woods must be a brilliant rum as my dad is so fussy

18th December 2015

themymic

Stunning! Thick and rich Guyanese Rum. As far as quality to price only Pusser's Gunpowder proof is better.

10th November 2015

The one. The only. Tried others, one I even gave away.

27th June 2015

conesui4e

I have always been a fan of dark NR, ever since my father who was in the navy , gave me a small tipple some 30 years ago and ever since I truly believe this is the best navy rum . it is toffee and caramel flavoured ,and is thicker than its lower class , darks ie lambs, & Morgan. If you find a bottle for £26 your very lucky, as I have paid £30.99 before and did not feel robbed , because it is worth it . No WONDER We HAVE A GREAT NAVY .

19th May 2015

1962.

Great rum,I had my first 'tot' in 1962 and still enjoy it today.

6th May 2015

the black stuff imbiber

I think this rum is bloody grand - tremendous value for a social club drink.

22nd December 2014

Powerful stuff

How rum should be

12th November 2014

Great rum

Classy and old fashioned, powerful and full of flavor. Always good to have it handy for cocktails or for the right occasion.

28th October 2014

DaiM

I love this rum, I could smell it all day long let alone drink it. Other rums seem watery and lifeless compaired to Wood's 100.

13th September 2014

delcatto

I am usually a whisky drinker but I have always wanted to try a 'proper' rum in the RN tradition. The first glass blew me away and I am hooked to this glorious drink. Treat with respect and enjoy, I know I will.

21st June 2014

Gary

A true submariners tot.

4th June 2014

woods 100

A proper tot. That caramel chocolate spice horny flavour with a deep alcohol hit (flavour) is awesome. Take it easy. Drink it on it's own slowly. Bathe in the afterglow. A ferkin stonker of a rum. One of the very best.

4th May 2014

Handle with care

Knocks spots off lesser rums, fiery but smooth. High ABV so be very careful and don't rush unless you want to fall over/go blind/sh*t yourself.

12th December 2013

Deep In The Woods

I woke up this morning covered in dry leaves and my clothes contained traces of the DNA of five different animals. I don't know how I ended up here but I do know why. Woods Rum. Smooth, drinkable and deadly.

12th September 2013

A Triumph

A truly fantastic rum, very dark, great flavours.. however not one to have more than two unless you dont plan to leave your chair all evening ;)

My favourite rum bar none

28th July 2013

woods rum

best rum on a cold night or any timecome to that

20th June 2013

No nonsense.

A fine dark rum, very drinkable.

14th June 2013

Mr Woods

It tastes damn good. The first shot is a little harsh but after it's pure nectar

5th June 2013

Wood's Old Navy Rum

This shot has made me delirious, unstable and so physically ill i thought i had salmonella. (for the third time). Anyone that claims they can get hints of toffee, cinnamon, cloves or pepper spice is lying.
