Made using a 45-plate Coffey still and aged in American white oak ex-bourbon casks, this really rather scrumptious molasses-based rum contains liquid aged for between nine and 12 years. The Rodney chap in question is in fact a famous admiral hailing from the 18th century – we’ll happily toast his seafaring successes with a drop of this.
Nose: Oaky and resinous with dark chocolate, honey, nutmeg and walnut notes.
Palate: More honey comes through, before cinnamon and vanilla pods catch up. More chocolate follows, this time in nib form, before leaf tobacco, oak and a sweet caramel add depth.
Finish: This is where those sweet spices come into their own. Delicious.
Overall: An oaky, dry rum bursting with flavour. One to sip and savour.

Works well neat or with mixers - gingerale and lime was an amazing combination, highly recommend

Fantastic, maybe the best rum I’ve tried. It’s okay, sweet, with light spices. Delicious.

This is horrible. This tastes and smells like what I imagine rubbing alcohol would taste and smell like. To be entirely fair to it, the nose does open with time and starts to give off some of the lovely bourbon/oak notes to go with the rubbing alcohol. The palate and finish are rubbing alcohol through and through though. Given the price, I would feel swindled if I had bought a whole bottle. We tried the HMS Formidable as part of 2019's Rum-vent and I've had to check multipe times because I'm having so much difficulty believing that Master of Malt is even describing the same rum.
