Best Rum to Drink Straight

First, my only negative - I hate the bottle design. It looks cheap and gimmicky, and it’s not translucent at all, so you never know how much is remaining in the bottle. As for the liquid, it’s right at that sweet spot ABV for my taste. I’ve tried the higher proof Foursquare exceptional cask rums, and while I do like those bottle designs, the alcohol content just bites me too hard and upsets my stomach, even on ice. So maybe I’ll just pour my R.L. Seale’s rum into an empty bottle of 2007, Detente or Sagacity.

Really nice daily go-to. Better price options out there, for little sacrifice. I drink a lot, so it matters.

This was a mainstay of mine for a couple years, before I discovered the cheaper and nearly comparable Plantation 5 year (Haven't tried the XO). I love most rums from Barbados, and this one is buttery and nicely oaked. Not that this is meant to be a review for Plantation 5, but just why I don't drink R.L. Seale's, anymore. It's a little overpriced, because you're buying the "really cool botte". I wish it came in plainer packaging, with lower price point. I'd go back. For the record, it is lush, balanced and thoroughly enjoyable.

Perfect for sipping. I’m hooked!

Very rich and smooth.
Don’t ruin this fine rum with tonic, ginger beer, ice, or other accoutrements.

worth of every penny

I love plantation XO, this one goes close to that IMO. Nice aftertaste, no burn! Iám glad that ordered more than one bottle!

Mr. Patrick N Hinds

Recently my wife and I visited Barbados. While there we toured the distillery and enjoyed tasting several samples. We took home a few bottles with us. I greatly enjoyed the 10 yr R.L. Seale's that I purchased. I would highly recommend it.

Buy, decant and start sipping in two months...

Really tight out of the freshly opened bottle...I was doubtful. If you want 'smooth', buy any of the adulterated 95% of rums on the market loaded down with sugar for the soon-to-be-diabetic palates and pass this one up. Or buy it an add your own damn sugar (it's the same thing) and still save money and have a superior drink.

Or...appreciate this for what it is; a virgin pure splash of rum in your glass. After airing out for a bit, the bite will diminish (but not disappear) leaving you with a rare, 10 year old rum drinking experience. This is $22 - TWENTY-TWO! - dollars in the U.S. and except for the company's own Doorly's, there's nothing else like it for the price. A quality drink irrespective of it's price.

Oh & the bottle shape is cool too ^^

Smooth with vanilla on the nose & quite dry.
On the finish you get delicate yet smokey oak.
Mixed you get honey hints as it loosens.

@purely one of the best: Then why did you not give it a star rating?

Vanilla & untoasted oak with a dry finish if drunk neat. With some honey as it loosens, however i did prefer mixing it with cola than sipping.Honey flavored cola mmmm...

purely one of the best

this rum unlike most of the high end sugar bomb rums that garner top dollar is free of added sugar and flavorings. what you get is from the barrel and aging. thats what makes it a true top of class rum and its flavor and complexity reflects that. this is real rum. do some research into added sugars to rum and you will be surprised to see how many premium aged rums have added sugar.

Decent but not a smash hit.

Maybe I was a bit too hyped by all the reviews on here giving it top scores. I wouldn't put it in the top of my list but it's definitely not a bad sipping rum. I found it a bit simple and not super rich. For a similar price I would suggest the Angostura 1919 instead as a superior choice.
