Made from rums of between 21 and 25 years of age, matured in 45 gallon oak casks, within six degrees of the equator in Guyana. El Dorado 21 was awarded a Gold at the International Rum Festival 2003 in Canada and a Silver at the 2003 International Wine and Spirit Competition in London. Most remarkably, this was the highest scoring rum ever to be tasted by the Beverage Tasting Institute in Chicago.
Buttery, with chocolatey notes of Rolos behind it. Ripe banana and fruity Christmas cake. Hints of tobacco and sandalwood, leading into spent match smokiness.
Sultanas, dates, blackcurrant and macadamia nuts. A touch of rosewater, too. The mid-palate brings dark chocolate and nutmeg too.
It just keeps going! There's fried banana and handfuls of raisin notes right through to the end, with just a little hint of spicy cinnamon.
WOW what a rum ! So dense but not in a bad but in a good way packed full of flavour and very dangerous and morish. It warms the cockles and is very easy to tell there are a load more rums older than 21 years in this magnificent offering. I’m mostly a molasses guy but I do really miss the day when you could get great old British naval Demerara rums that had some flavour in them because up until now they were not any really great Demerara rums and El Dorado have now changed my mind again. I loved trying the full range working my way up to the 21 Y/O a bottle at a time. I liked what Ralphy said in youtube and I quote “Captain Jack Sparrow would sell the black Pearl to get his hands on a bottle of this rum” and I completely agree. Well done and thank you El Dorado and thank you to Master Of Malt for selling this wonder full dram. If this rum is a measure of things to come then the 25 is going to be unbeatable. Right on to the 25 Y/O now ! 5 stars easy.
Such a smooth and spiced aged rum. I'd give it a 5 star if it weren't for El Dorado 25.
I have always been a top shelf bourbon drinker choosing to sip neat or with a cube of ice if the proof is over 100. I decided to buy this El Dorado 21 on a whim, and frankly, it is priced around the same mark as some of the better bourbons I buy. I was extremely pleased with this purchase and can say this rum totally has my attention. The nose is rich and full, the palate is smooth and full of nuances and the finish is the best part of all. I can without question say this rum will have a permanent place in my cabinet along with Pappy Van Winkle as a running mate.
To date this is my favourite rum. The Appleton Estate 21 is also very good but a tad lighter and more a summer sipper. This is almost a "winter rum" - it's dark and heavy. If you're predominately a whisky drinker like me you won't find this too sweet and it pairs beautifully with a cigar (so far a drew estate t52 and a montecristo no 2 have been the best experiences).
This is just about my favourite rum out of my collection of about 50. It really doesn't get any better. The 15 is almost as good and thus offers better value for money but if you are after the crème de la crème then this is it.
