Rum blending house Charles Merser & Co. hails from the Hayman family (yes, the same folks behind Hayman's Gin), and is London's first rum blending house in over a century! The rum itself is distilled in the Caribbean, but is blended in London. In keeping with the traditions set by London's merchant blending houses of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, there's no sugar or colouring to be seen here, just good old fashioned rum rested in oak.
The bottle represents more than meets the eye too, with the dimpled bottle representing the River Thames on which rum was transported, while the hound and post logo is a little nod to the days when most Londoners couldn't read, and would follow symbols to find their way to merchant houses. On that note, Merser literally means 'merchant' in Old English.
Nose: You can’t mistake that high ester Jamaican component, pineapples just jump out of the glass, followed by grassy vegetal flavours, orange peel and dark chocolate.
Palate: Creamy and elegant, with stone fruit to the fore and the Jamaican funk present but very much in the background.
Finish: Vanilla, coconut and chocolate.
Overall: Elegant, harmonious and distinctive.

Got a bottle after seeing it on a 'catch up' Saturday Kitchen. Had a couple neat and wasnt that impressed, resided the bottle to be used in cocktails.... thats where it comes alive. Even with a cola the flavours really comes to the front. However, eveyone who has tasted it seems to say more about the bottle design than the rum!

Its all form over content. Great bottle , great design , good back story. Unfortunately an insipid taste , vauge sherry overtones but a poor choice by me , followed the tasting notes but I must be on another planet or lost my sense of taste.

Unfortunately Saturday Kitchen Live is no longer available to view - but take my word for it this is a fantastic rum - and what's more it comes boxed - from Mercer & Co. in person.
