Wessex Gin hails from the Wessex Distillery, and the spirit has been dubbed 'Alfred the Great', who turns out to be king of the Anglo-Saxons back in the day. The star botanical here is chervil, giving a slight aniseed flavour. In Anglo-Saxon times, it was believed that chervil strengthened the stomach when mixed with honey and a freshly ground poppy. We just think it tastes good here though.
Wessex Distillery was awarded the IWSC 2022 UK Gin Producer of the Year trophy.
A touch of aniseed and a whole lot of juniper, followed by a good helping of citrus peel, a drizzle of honey and a delicate floral undertone.
A real find, this. I admit to being a sucker for nice bottles and that is what drove this buy, but a top quality gin lay within. Fairly simple in construction, juniper heavy, some citrus but not too much, no doubt some other things my palate can’t put a name to. Good, clean gin which doesn’t try to be too clever. A certainty to buy again. Decent price too, so many gins pushing £40 these days.
Simply one of the best tasting plain gins I've ever had
A serious, dry gin that is big on juniper in the first sip, before opening into more complex and fragrant botanical flavours. Not too sweet like many modern gins. Despite the chervil giving a hint of aniseed, it's very subtle - I can't stand pastis and this is lovely. Highly recommended.
Saw this advertised on a social media gin and tonic page giveaway so purchased a bottle myself. Top gin! now one of my faves.
It's a gorgeous bottle and the gins fine enough - but the danger is this price point. It'a taste isn't far from a tanquery, and that's the killer for me. At this price, I expected more; Carroun has more character and Gordon's is half the price.
