Masons Dry Yorkshire Gin Bottling Note

A London Dry Gin from God's Own County! Masons use Harrogate spring water for their gins along with juniper, a proportion of which is from their own bushes, and a combination of secret botanicals including citrus. Produced in small batches, each bottle has hand written batch and bottle numbers.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Saffron, glazed hot cross buns, aniseed and lemongrass. Some maltiness too.

Palate: Specifically fennel now, getting towards liquorice. This is still very much gin though, with notes of juniper and pine.

Finish: Juniper, a hint of parma violet and some lingering lemon zest.

Overall: Masons set out to create something that "wasn't just your run of the mill, off the shelf, generic gin" and we think they've achieved just that with this spicy, slightly malty number that has a pleasant fennel character.

Masons Dry Yorkshire Gin Reviews

Good but not consistent

Initially I liked it. It had a strong taste I thought was Cardamon. After that it seemed to fizzle out midway and on the finish.

Although would only recommend if you like Fennel / Anniseed flavours - they’re subtle but definitely there!

Too much aniseed

Not good …. felt like I'd been force fed a bag of schoolboy aniseed balls. And the price? You could buy two bottles of Beefeater or Tanqueray for the price of this.

Wonderful taste

Tried this and purchased a bottle at Country Living Fair. A lovely gin and everyone who has tried it has loved the flavour.

just love this gin. Have been drinking since it was launched and love the way it has layers of flavour and smoothness.

A lovely clean gin, don't want to drink any other

I took two girlfriends to The Cedar Court hotel for the MASONS gin masterclass last week. What a great event it was., the best part was the nicest gin I have tasted for a very long time, we're all hooked. The presentation was so informative and whole evening was fun with lovely tapas to finish

If you haven’t tried it I recommend it you won’t be disappointed x

I recently bought some Gin from the rhubarb festival. Having not tried it before couldn’t wait to give it a go . I loved it the original was so smooth & mixed with fever tree tonic is a winner my husband doesn’t do gin but was impressed with yours & said he could drink it that it was lovely.

Best gin I ever tasted

Had this gin for the first time last night and I was blown away by the flavour.

18th February 2018

Loved it

We were given a Masons Gin gift set for Christmas from a much loved nephew and his wife ~ we love them even more now! I'm very partial to a G&T and have tasted some excellent Gins (though not Asda's own brand) some of which taste slightly thin compared to Masons. It is to be savoured, rather then knocked back. We absolutely loved it. I can appreciate that everyone has different tastes in all things, but I do believe that those who compare it with cheap gins have had their taste buds damages by too much cheap alcohol.

A great gin!

This gin is amazing!

This gin is seriously good! Alcohol wise it is extremely clean (God knows what the people saying it was chemically are on about) and botanically it is by far the most interesting/complex gin I have had. I was really shocked its score was so low, I guess some people don't like being given something different from the super juniper forward gins they are used to. Unless you have the palate of a mule buy this gin- you wont regret it!

My new favourite!

Best gin I have had

16th December 2017

Not for me

I get a really strong aniseed finish which really isn't for me. Too many sambuca's have put me off that taste for life!

15th November 2017

Weird sharp bubblegummy finish. Would not buy again.

Perfect g & t with rosemary

I have drunk a large variety of gins and Masons gin served with a Fevertree tonic and a sprig of rosemary is definitely in my top five gins. Clean refreshing taste with aniseed background undertones - I love it.

1st September 2017

A very distinct him with aniseed and liquorice.

This gin has a very unique taste with definite hints of aniseed and liquorice, both flavours I love, making it a totally unique taste. So different is the taste I think I could easily pick out Masons in a blind taste test. I can only assume reviewers who didn't pick up on this, or taste the difference with Asda own label, must be smokers or with impaired taste buds! I tried it with Fevertree Mediterranean tonic but would be keen to hear suggestions of suitable garnishes and tonics. I wouldn't put it with lime or cucumber.

Smells like Multi-Vitamins

Malty nose. Unftunately not to our tastes. I really couldn't recommend this gin

mrs maria martin

beautiful drink best gin I have ever tasted I my self am a vodka drinker but had a gin when I was in York at the weekend have been looking for it ever since its it sold abroad

3rd May 2016

ASDA own brandalike - no way!

I read the review comparing this to Asda's own brand gin so decided to do my own blind tasting. All I can say is the other reviewer perhaps left some washing up liquid residue in the glass containing the ASDA gin. It's the only thing I can imagine would improve its flavour...

4th March 2016

Very distinctive

Distinctive taste. Very good aftertaste. Don't buy if you're expecting generic supermarket gin.

12th December 2015

Superb Gin well worth the price

A truly unique gin. Lovely balanced floral notes all mixed with a touch of citrus lead botanical's, create flavours not found in other comparably priced gins. That said this is not a cheap gin, I suppose it just depends if you want quality over quantity. How anyone can compare this product to a supermarket own brand is truly beyond me!! Well worth every penny in my book.

Pas mal de tout!

4th July 2015

Asda's own brand re-bottled?

Me and the chaps recently did a blind taste off, using a number of different gins (some expensive, some cheap). This one tasted just like Asda's own brand in a side by side comparison. Worth the hefty price tag? In an word, NO! Get yourself to Asda instead, a snip at £10 a bottle.

3rd July 2015

Took the taste test... No contest

Was 'up sold' (in the nicest possible way) a G&T Mason's style in a Harrogate pub. I'm not a drinkie, and don't really drink that much gin, so can't really espouse the virtues of the various flavours but having sipped a friends Gordon's G&T alongside this stuff I was amazed. Lovely flavours, varying from sniff to sip to gulp. Not cheap but then I'm happy to pay a premium for something a bit different, even though I am a Yorkshireman. London 0 Harrogate 4!

25th June 2015

Supporting Yorkshiire?

Makes Gordon's taste delightful. Maybe it came from a bad batch!

17th April 2015

My fav gin

I cannot rate this gin more highly, for me it is so tasty it is dangerous - no it isn't an average failsafe gin and will divide opinion but if it works for you, you are scuppered since you will fall in love like I have, and shun all other gins - it is THAT GOOD!

15th April 2015

Nothing special

Not great considering the price tag..

15th March 2015

Lots of punchy flavours, but not for me

I really wanted to love this gin, and I'm sure if the flavours weren't so heady and complex I would have enjoyed it, but I didnt. The aniseed and liquorice flavours worked but the punchy lemony and even salty end lost it for me. Much better neat rather than with tonic . Sadly not for me.

13th March 2015

Watch what you partner it with

I loved this gin neat - it's so complex - and it made a great G&T. However there is a strong liquorice component that reacted badly with the bitter element in my negroni. The result was too much aniseed flavour. Def. an interesting gin but it's not a gin for all seasons.

Hit and miss

I love gin, come from Yorkshire and my name's main Mason. Even this is not enough for me to love this gin. My friend, who introduced me to it, really likes it; I found it slightly chemical in flavour. I own many many better gins

Reviews removed?

Can someone at MOM please explain why a number of reviews for this gin have recently been removed? I notice that it is just the negative ones that have gone...

What's the point in asking your customers for their opinions, if you are just going to censor them??

Had this after reading some promising reviews, I consider myself a decent judge of fine gin and being a fan of London gin I had high hopes on this, however this was not for me.

Bought masons gin at Harvey Nicks in Leeds a few weeks ago, unusual taste , better neat with ice than with feverfew tonic. Will certainly buy again.

31st December 2014

Bought to increase my gin collection - love it, probably in my top 3 gins. Think those who can't appreciate must only like the gordons/bombay sapphire taste. Can be drunk neat but the G&T it makes with pink grapefruit garnish is brilliant.
It's not a flat taste, it changes as you drink it, a gentle warmth and the range of botanicals shine through in a 3d way unlike other 2d juniper only tasting gins.

13th December 2014

Unique flavour that divides opinion

I tried this gin with feverfew tonic at the Tatton RHS show. it was interesting enough to buy a bottle. pontefract cakes and pine are what I taste. pleasant, but not typical modern gin flavours. friends who tried it tasted the fennel/liquorice base and rejected it. I prefer it to cucumber gins but the 'Marmite' reaction means I won't get it again. maybe a heather and sea flavoured gin could persuade folks that Yorkshire gin can do it?

13th December 2014

love it

Maybe its marmite - this gin is so unique and full of tastes/flavours. i love it, Serve well and enjoy. Orange peel the best garnish, but lime is great too.

What's not to like?!

As an ambassador for Yorkshire produce I cannot recommend this gin enough. I was totally mesmerized and in awe of the flavours in this gin. I had not read any reviews before tasting this nor was I aware of the taste but I was not disappointed. The combination of liquorice and citrus peel proved to be a delight to my palate and was simply enjoyed over ice. Perhaps not to everyones taste but that just leaves more for the rest of us!

6th August 2014

Nope... Just don't get this gin. It must be a matter of taste but bought this at food fair and had high hopes. I'm keen to support Yorkshire initiatives but this one doesn't do it for me. Aroma is floral and rose like but tried it as gin and tonic with lime (yuk) and again with twist of orange... Slightly better but curiously industrial taste. Wondered if we'd got a bad batch but then looked up reviews. Difficult to describe but initially fennelish then frankly unpleasant aftertaste... Dandelion and burdock gone wrong. Shame. I would have loved to support this gin but sorry... Won't buy again.

27th July 2014

Very pleasant

I tried this at a friends party recently & I have to disagree with the very negative review left on here - perhaps they are a competitor wishing to blacken the name?
I found this gin very smooth & easy on the palette, going particularly well with green apple or grapefruit. I would definitely recommend trying it for yourself as it really is worth a 'shot' :-)

20th July 2014

Made a pleasant change

Picked up the Masons Dry Yorkshire Gin at Selby Food festival ...... Was really pleasantly surprised by the taste, it's different and distinct. Made a refreshing change. Give this a chance ..... There is nothing better in life than variety ..... Put mine in the freezer for a time before serving ..... Nice .

13th July 2014

Being a Yorkshireman I had high hopes for this. Unfortunately I'm slightly underwhelmed. I agree with one of the other reviews, it certainly is unique! Heavy scent of back pepper and an overwhelming taste of it on the palette too, also quite a strong finish of aniseed and slight citrus notes, only a hint of Juniper. Not for me, but still worth trying.
