Mermaid Gin Bottling Note

A gin with a sense of place, being made with Isle of Wight rock samphire and Boadicea hops alongside juniper, coriander seeds, fresh lemon zest, grains of paradise, angelica, liquorice, orris and elderflower.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Earthy sweetness and some citrus zing with a touch of sea air and warming pepper.

Mermaid Gin Reviews

Best gin I've ever had

This is just gorgeous gin. I love it. I really enjoyed their strawberry gin too.

21st November 2020

Big taste gin

Wow, just what a gin used to taste like & for us, just what it should taste like. A good hit of flavour with a lingering aftertaste and great aroma. Can sip it neat or we found best with an unfalvoured tonic.

20th November 2020

A big NO.

No quality...

18th November 2020

Not to my liking.

Taste totally different as described!

16th November 2020

Lots more nicer gins out there

This was a present for my 72 year old mother, she’ll usually drink anything and loves her gin! Unfortunately this was not for her And gave it back to me. So me and my husband tried some last night and I must admit this is not a quality gin has a very particular taste which is not nice. We are not fans give me a bottle of Gordon’s or
Bombay over this any day.

10th November 2020

Wonderful, if a little expensive but worth it.

I think this is one of the best gins I have ever tasted. Even good neat, with a good slice of orange or grapefruit.

6th November 2020

Not for me

I was given a bottle for a present. It was not smooth one bit left a funny after taste.

5th November 2020

Try before you buy!!!

Definitely think this is one to try before you buy! I’m a real gin lover...favourite Irish gin being Boatyard, but really want to try this just wasn’t sure. Thankfully I found it in a local bar and definitely won’t be be purchasing. It was ok but only as a one off. My friend also didn’t enjoy it

4th November 2020

Not quite what I was expecting

I had high hopes they was demolished after my first swig. This is in the same league as Gordon’s I’m afraid at quadruple the price.

3rd November 2020

Style over substance

Poor and overrated. Try all your sprits neat. This will come bottom of the pile

3rd November 2020

Not the quality you would expect. There are so many high quality premium gins out there - this is not one of them!

2nd November 2020

Incredible flavours - just a fantastic product

I love this gin, the flavour is amazing; it's like no other gin I've tasted! I am now a big fan and this Christmas will be giving it to my gin-mad BIL.

2nd November 2020

Overrated cos it's in bloody blue bottle. Rubbish!

To say a vast majority of people have been conned by this gin is an understatement. It has a harsh, poorly balanced flavour, and bitter aftertaste. It's only redemption is that if you throw enough tonics/fruits/mixers at it, you can just blow out it's basic taste and use it up quickly before making the far more important decision of where the blue bottle is going to go as a nice decoration/candle holder, whatever. Buy Tanqueray or Beefeater for God's sake!

2nd November 2020

These reviews can’t be true...

Poor tasting gin all hype no bite...

2nd November 2020

Way over priced!!

Nice bottle but gin taste weird, not for me Wouldn’t buy again.

2nd November 2020

Wouldn’t bother.

Prefer Gordon’s this tasteless gin is way over priced.

30th October 2020

Mermaid Gin with Tonic

This is the first Gin that I have found to be one that converted me to eight a Gin Drinker. Clean fresh taste and smell perfect with any tonic. 5 stars from me.

21st October 2020

Disappointed, not enough character, misses power and the sapphire doesn't do his job.
Beautiful bottle but the gin doesn't overwhelmed me.
Not buying it again.

11th October 2020

Best gin yet

Hands down one of the best gins I have bought!

9th September 2020

Responsibly made and darn tasty!

Wow so this one really divides the crowd - maybe its the corriander? So I guess we should start with the packaging as we do judge with our eyes as well as our taste buds and yes it really is very pretty. A heavy weight embossed glass bottle with cork closure and security wrap all of which is certified plastic free to protect our planet.
Taste wise, personally I think this is a great gin. Juniper lead and premium strength at 42% this gin has weight and body which makes it as good for mixing as it is over ice. Comparisons to Gordon's are frankly ridiculous (if I had to compare it to a mainstream gin it has more flavour profiles in common with Bombay Sapphire). Its USP is that it contains 10 sustainably and ethically sourced botanicals including samphire. Its really subtle but this gives a fresh vegetal edge to the gin along with just a touch of salinity and citrus (if you don't know samphire think very fresh green beans or super young asparagus with a sprinkle of sea salt and a squeeze of lemon). Grains of paradise give spice and hops add to that lovely body. It does have corriander and elderflower too so maybe this is where the crowd devides, personally I'm not a huge corriander fan but in this i think it works to add warmth. I think the price is reasonable for a small batch product (not sure where the reviewers claiming this is mass produced are getting their info from) and its always nice to support smaller uk businesses. I received it as a gift but would buy for myself. 5 stars from me.

9th September 2020

Excellent gin - highly recommend - superb aroma and flavour

Bought this for myself and thoroughly enjoyed it - an absolute delight! Have given as gifts to friends and family. Love the new bottle too.

26th August 2020

Very disappointed!

Very disappointed! I wouldn’t even put this up against Gordon’s! No real taste or refinement! poor all round! Even worse this morning as a gift

26th August 2020

looks and tastes great

great looking bottle, excellent tasting gin, good provenance and responsibly made

20th August 2020

The best ever ❤

It's also lovely with a sprig of thyme & with ginger ale

16th August 2020

Goes down a treat

I had mermaid gin for my 60th this year, absolutely amazing

15th August 2020

Best served with cucumber and tonic

A really wonderful gin, best served with cucumber and tonic. Great present too with the unique bottle.

12th August 2020

Beautiful bottle and distinctive gin

My husband was given a bottle of this for his birthday this month and loved it .I personally don't like gin but loved the amazing aroma when I made him his gin and tonic!

20th July 2020

would definitely recommend

Fantastic flavour ❤

20th July 2020

Beautiful nose and amazing finish

Mermaid Gin was recommended by someone I trust with such recommendations. The instant I poured, the juniper nose popped. This is smooth and able-bodied. My only regret is it is difficult to find and I only purchased one bottle - and it's gone. I must replenish. I can't see how any gin aficionado wouldn't say the same, but to each his own.

14th July 2020

Definitely style over substance

Don't judge a gin by it's cover. Liquid is ok but way over priced to pay for the fancy bottle.

10th July 2020

Crisp and refreshing

My absolute favourite. Crisp, refreshing and distinctive. Delicious.

5th July 2020

Try before you buy

Definitely think this is one to try before you buy! I’m a real gin lover...favourite Irish gin being Boatyard, but really want to try this just wasn’t sure. Thankfully I found it in a local bar and definitely won’t be be purchasing. It was ok but only as a one off. My friend also didn’t enjoy it .

5th July 2020

Not for me

Not that great wouldn’t recommend

3rd July 2020

Lovely and tasteful.

Really love this so much. It tastes as good as it looks. First came across on the IOW last summer. Never gives me a headache! It makes a great gift as it looks so beautiful.

6th June 2020

Lovely gin, very refreshing

Lovely gin. Perfect with a slice of cucumber and an Indian tonic.
Will buy again

3rd June 2020

This is delicious! It has a distinctive flavour which I loved. Beautiful bottle too!

2nd June 2020

Not for me!

Tasteless gin in a nice bottle.

1st June 2020

Beautiful gin in a beautiful bottle.

27th May 2020

Utterly love this gin. Anyone who doesn’t clearly doesn’t do Gin ! Has to be experienced at the Wishing Well we’re we have on every visit enjoyed wonderful atmosphere summer or winter. Everyone is entitled to their taste but to me this is just lovely and best drank on a hot evening maybe at Seagrove or Priory with a fire an incoming tide. Or go pink with cassis and Prosecco While dipping your toes off the rib !

20th May 2020

Blooming Gorgeous Gin

Blooming gorgeous gin, the best in the market. Great taste and lovely flavour.
Great team at the Wishing Well always welcoming and hope to see you soon

20th May 2020

Worth a try

A very nice gin, I was recommended this by a work colleague and initially I was underwhelmed, as my expectation was probably too high. Second time around you can really taste the distinctive flavour. I will be trying this again at some point.

18th May 2020

Best Gin I've ever had

Absolutely amazing - drink with elderflower fevertree tonic, goes down a treat

15th May 2020

Trip to the seaside

Now this I really did enjoy. For me best over ice to taste the hint of samphire

10th May 2020

Don’t believe everything you read

I’m shocked at what other people are saying about this gin first tried it on Isle of Wight a couple of years ago we had went to the distillery and it’s definitely not missed produced as one reviewer said, and as for it being like Gordon’s I can’t stand Gordon’s and this is nothing like it, I only have to sniff a gin to know it’s Gordon’s, so I don’t know what these reviewers have been drinking, so don’t take notice of what you read I love this gin and was so happy to find it in the Tebay services and at a very reasonable price would highly recommend this gin .

5th May 2020

the good and the bad in one bottle

Amazing bottle but poor gin this is such a shame.

30th April 2020

Very poor gin, don’t be fooled people!

This is poor quality gin, it’s great if you drink nothing but Gordons, but we find it cheap and thin in a pretty bottle. Don’t be fooled by the bottle, buy something better.

25th April 2020

Can’t get enough!!

Highly recommend, lovely gin in a beautiful bottle...

21st April 2020

Beautiful for enjoying in the sunshine

A smooth gin and easy-drinking gin, great for enjoying in the sunshine. It's been a firm favourite of mine for years

21st April 2020

Highly recommend.

First purchased this Gin at the distillery on the Isle Of Wight which is well worth a visit. Amazing bottle. The gin itself is Smooth yet robust In flavour.

21st April 2020

Great Bottle and Gin

Sent some to mum who is self isolating, she really enjoyed receiving the blue bottle and thought the gin was great with a lovely flavour

20th April 2020

Taste of the sea

My first time trying this was in Yarmouth on The Isle of Wight and I was pleasantly surprised. Try having it with a sprig of rock samphire like the locals do. Will buy again for sure

20th April 2020

There is only one gin better than Mermaid and that's the HMS Victory Navy Strength, by the same company! Purchased a few bottles of Mermaid and it will continue to be top of my buying list. Thanks Master of Malt

20th April 2020

A stunning gin, easy drinking and pairs beautifully with a huge range of tonics. Stunning bottle worthy of the liquid inside!

A stunning gin, easy drinking and pairs beautifully with a huge range of tonics. Stunning bottle worthy of the liquid inside!

20th April 2020

Mass produced rubbish

With so many great gins on the market, this is a well designed bottle and well marketed, absolutely not a great gin. Buy somethig else. Dishonest rubbish!

19th April 2020

Lovely gin

Such a great taste and extremely smooth!

21st March 2020

Fabulous gin.

Served on P&O Aurora. This is a really smooth gin with excellent taste. I always taste (not drink) a new one neat and Mermaid is definitely one of exceptional quality.

4th March 2020

Lovely craft gin

Honestly a great gin. Quite bold flavours and not overly sweet - which is nice, as a lot of other craft gins seem to overdo it on that front. The recently redesigned bottle is beautiful, but it's been delicious since well before the redesign.

24th February 2020

Rough spirit

The flavour of the gin itself isn't too bad, passable, but the spirit itself is very rough and unpleasant.
A triumph of style over substance, avoid

19th February 2020

good marketing is the only reason this is popular

terrible quality gin, very annoying that the nice bottle makes everyone think this is good. Not even a small batch gin, mass produced tat

14th January 2020

Not great.

Not the quality you would expect. There are so many high quality premium gins out there - this is not one of them!

30th December 2019

Will buy again

Good quality and beautiful bottle, what's more to like...

18th December 2019

Boadicea Hops are the star of the show!

Seems like this is a very divisive gin - and that's no bad thing. First off, this is definitely not just for the gin and lemonade crowd, it's a very complete and stand out expression. For me the stand out here is the boadicea hops - they add a fantastic drying bitterness to the gin. And finally, the gin existed long before the bottle redesign - so it's not all or show!

Myself and a fellow hops from Leeds did a full review here:

13th November 2019

A lovely smooth gin, and a great bottle too.

9th November 2019

send me another

my fave bottle containing an amazing gin 5 stars

27th October 2019

Nice bottle but average gin

Fancy bottle but gin is nothing special, I've tried many gins and in my opinion this is average.

5th October 2019

Have these reviewers been drinking nothing but Gordon’s?

For the gin & lemonade drinkers! Enjoy!

25th September 2019

Characterful gin with citrus-peppery finish.

Gin with intense character and depth and topping a light citrus component with a pleasantly peppery finish. The bottle is awesome. The gin too.

11th September 2019

A really different gin beautifully presented! Lovely taste

10th September 2019

I recently attended a wedding of a family member and was served the mermaid gin! Firstly the bottle is beautiful but most importantly the flavour is just stunning! It is most definitely worth the price tag! We followed up with a further camping trip to iow and brought a bottle home and I have just finished the bottle... the gin is beautiful easy to drink even without mixer!!!! I use lemonAde as tonicis too bitter but I imagine it would go well with tonic also !

1st September 2019

Really good

Really good and a very nice looking bottle.

1st September 2019

Ok had better

Ordinary gin in a fantastic bottle.

31st August 2019

Basic cheap gin, pretty bottle.

11th August 2019

Not great

This has been on my list for a while, but it’s poor to me. I’ve been though a hundred gins and this just doesn’t cut it with the best. Poor spirit.

2nd August 2019

Really nice but maybe for special occasions due to the price

My neighbour just gave me a try of this and it is lovely and smooth. Easy to drink neat but obviously due to the strength I did have to mix it. I would definitely recommend this.

29th July 2019

Cheaply made rubbish, the funds have obviously gone into the bottle - nasty and bitter.

24th July 2019

Nice bottle

Nice bottle pretty average gin.

7th July 2019

Excellent gin - beautiful bottle

Awesome gin, beautiful bottle! Need I say more? Will definitely buy more.

30th June 2019

one of the best bottles out there

wow what a bottle and a great gin... mines all gone , need another

25th June 2019

The gin inside is just as stunning as the bottle. Don't overdo the tonic thou. Keep that simple.

4th May 2019

Far too expensive pensive

It's Gin.... Paying for the label

15th August 2018

Lovely fresh complex spirit

Complex, smooth, clean, citrusy with a hint of saltiness. A beautiful craft gin.

22nd March 2017

Refreshing Gin

Really nice, easy to drink gin. Excellent as a gin and tonic and seems like it would work well with most other cocktails (or straight up in a martini).

18th January 2017

Lovely with Cucumber!

So refreshing yet not overpowering. Tastes wonderful with cucumber or on its one with a few crushed juniper berries.
