Stewart’s whisky began with the blending firm J&G Stewart Ltd, which dates back to Edinburgh in 1779. The blend was a favourite of banker JP Morgan, whose cellar full of bottles of Stewart’s was given out to his friends after his death. In 1917 Distillers Company Ltd acquired J&G Stewart, and the trade included stock of 8,000 butts of whisky! Eventually, in 1986, Stewart’s was acquired by Whyte & Mackay.
