Despite being surrounded by rum-distilling countries like Costa Rica and Guatemala, El Salvador in Central America doesn’t have a long distilling heritage. The country’s first major distillery, Cihuatan, only began making rum in 2016. Ron Colon is a brand set up by three Felicity Gransden, Pepijn Janssens and Thurman Wise. It produces a range of dark and high strength rums including some infused with coffee, making use of one of El Salvador’s biggest exports. Though most of the spirit used by Ron Colon comes from Cihuatan, it also buys from outside the country including some Jamaican pot still rums.
