The story of this revered Bavarian brewery began way back in 1634, unusually with monks, of all people. The Paulaner Monks of the Neudeck Monastery would hand-craft beer of such a standard that it captured the attention of beer lovers of Munich, and the commercial brewers of Munich. Recognising the strength of the competition, they petitioned the mayor to ban the brewing monks from selling their beer. On February 24, 1634, the mayor rejected their complaint, and this date is now celebrated as the founding date of the Paulaner Brewery.
Since then, Paulaner’s popularity has extended far beyond the city limits of Munich, and the brands now brews more than 2 million hectoliters per year, using water drawn from the brewery’s 800 foot deep well. The combination of this unique water source, centuries of refinement in brewing techniques and effective marketing based on an understanding of the popularity of Bavarian tradition has led the company to considerable success.
Paulaner Brauerei now ships to over 80 countries worldwide, creates one of Germany’s most popular wheat beers, Hefe-Weißbier Naturtrüb, and is also one of only 6 breweries pouring beer at the annual Oktoberfest in Munich.
