Back in 2003, the Moa Brewing Company was founded in the famous winemaking region of Marlborough, New Zealand. It’s founder, Josh Scott, is the son of Allan Scott, a well-established winemaker (as is Josh!). It’s named after the region where early settlers hunters the Moa, which were massive flightless birds which roamed the lands on big, long legs (they became extinct in the 1400s). In 2007, Moa was joined by David Nicholls, who became their Head Brewer.
Of course, with all the winemaking-history surrounding Moa, their production sometimes takes inspiration from the production of wine, like bottle conditioning. They also take inspiration from New Zealand itself, often using local ingredients and New Zealand hops.
