Long Man Brewery

The Long Man Brewery was founded in the Cuckmere Valley in East Sussex, England, taking inspiration for its name from the nearby Long Man of Wilmington, a hill figure on the steep slopes of Windover Hill (he’s worth a Google). The brewery has gained a reputation for its handmade, locally sourced and sustainable award winning beers, crafted in a converted flint barn in the heart of the South Downs National Park.

The brand uses whole leaf’ hops sourced from Britain and spring malting barley for its beers, which are grown in 500 acres of farmland surrounding the brewery. After brewing, over 150 Tonnes of ‘spent grain’ is fed to livestock on the farm, and any surplus is then composted. The Long Man Brewery pitches its house yeast into every brew, allowing it to harvest and re-pitch from each freshly fermented batch. This recycles the yeast and ensures a consistent character in all its beers.

Approximately 1 million litres of water are used in The Long Man beer per year, which is drawn from the aquifer beneath the chalk downs. An advanced UV filtration system is utilised, followed by ‘Burtonisation’ to ensure the water is perfect for brewing. Any waste water is then collected, treated and used to help irrigate the farm. A bank of 100 solar panels on the roof of the farm’s grain store generate 25kva of electricity per year to help power the Brewhouse. We told you they were sustainable!
