Kamm & Sons

Alex Kammerling, the creator of Kamm & Sons, has worked in the drinks industry for over 22 years, primarily as a bartender. He has invented hundreds of cocktails, published his own cocktail book, and has also been part of brands such as Bombay Sapphire, Campari, and Grey Goose. However, this was all before he set about creating his own drinks: Kamm & Sons British Aperitif and Mr Kamm's Gin.

The brand was launched initially as ‘Kammerlings’, but was forced to relaunch under the name ‘Kamm & Sons’ on 17 January 2012 after the German company ‘Kuemmerling’ raised a legal issue over the similarity of the names. Kammerling was inspired to reference the involvement of his family in the new name, as his father sits on the board of directors, his brother is the designer and his cousin is the web developer. It was also something of a tribute to the legacy of his great grandfather, who worked as a confectionist specializing in herbal remedies.

Kamm & Sons British Aperitif, the first drink Kammerling created, was inspired by the idea of creating an aperitif in an English style that would be reminiscent of gin, but with a lower ABV and Italian-influenced bitterness. A total of 41 botanicals are used in the process of creating the aperitif. Initially, the likes of ginseng, fresh grapefruit peels and juniper are macerated before a separate distillate(an infusion of wormwood, gentian and manuka honey) is added.

In 2018 the apéritif producer expanded into the gin category with the launch of Mr Kamm’s Gin. Described as a modern interpretation of a classic London Dry gin style, the closely guarded family recipe took five years to develop and a total of 45 botanicals, including juniper, apricot kernel, hibiscus, rosehip, blue butterfly pea and citra hops.

41 of those botanicals are distilled in a traditional pot still, while the remaining four botanicals (manuka honey, gentian, wormwood and annatto) are macerated in pure alcohol and left to marry for a total of four weeks to provide a bitter-sweet aspect. These two elements are blended together with a touch of sugar and water and the ABV is eventually reduced to 42%. A tasting panel, including Kammerling, taste each batch to assess the quality.
