Johnny Drum Distiling Co.

The name Johnny Drum, according to the bottle’s label, comes from the tale of a drummer boy who served in the year 1861 during the American Civil War. As he was under the age of 18, the only way he could join the service was as a drummer or messenger, so he chose the former. After the war’s conclusion, it was said that Johnny returned home to his native Kentucky, turning his hand to agriculture and toiling in the corn fields.

In the hardships of life post-war, Johnny couldn’t afford to let his excess corn crop go to waste, so he needed a way to convert it into a profitable item. His solution was to make bourbon, and it wasn’t long before it came to be recognised as a particularly exceptional bourbon whiskey, made with that same determination that saw him serve as a drummer boy all those years ago. This brand of whiskey was accordingly named as homage to his and all the young drummers and messengers service, and to the tale of that fabled bourbon.

Johnny Drum was originally developed by Thompson Willett as an exclusive for a wholesaler in California in the 1960s. While it was a groundbreaking release for the brand, and one that set the standard for future small-batch bourbon releases such as Pure Kentucky, Rowan’s Creek, Noah’s Mill and Kentucky Vintage, it is not actually made at Willett Distillery. In fact, the distillation source is currently unknown to the general public, and rumors abound to the identity of this Kentucky bourbon producer. The proximity to certain distilleries and the flavor profile and quality of the bourbon have led a couple of names being mooted with confidence, Heaven Hill in particular, but nothing has been confirmed as of yet.

All we know is how good this bourbon tastes, whether it's the Black Label whiskey, or the 15 Year Old, this beauty is pretty hard to beat*.

*This was a poor attempt at a drumming pun. I take full responsibility.
