Hancock’s is a slightly forgotten range of bourbon that’s distilled, bottled and distributed by the good folks at Buffalo Trace. Supposedly, the inspiration for the name is Hancock Lee, an intrepid Virginia explorer. He co-founded Leesburg and established a small camp in present day Franklin County, almost two decades before Kentucky became the Union's 15th state.

Why choose to honour him for a brand of bourbon? Because that land he established a small camp on is said to be the very same on which Buffalo Trace was built and still stands on today. If that’s not enough for our dear reader, then know that he’s clearly a man of drams, as Englishman Nicholas Cresswell can attest to. His diary entry on June 12, 1775 reads as follows, "Went to Capt. Lee's camp, who treated me very kindly with a dram of Whiskey.” I think he used to work here, to be honest.

Distinctive among other Buffalo Trace efforts, Hancock’s tend to have a high rye content mash bill and oddly specific ABV’s (their President's Reserve is bottled at 44.45% percent). But this undervalued brand represents more than a slightly niche bourbon, unfortunately overshadowed. Hancock’s is for those who longed to imagine themselves straddling that same frontier as Capt. Lee, hunting buffalo and swigging from a dusty dram.

A brand with personality, Hancock’s achieve an individuality even in relative anonymity; and can boast a range of bourbons with a loyal cult following. Hancock’s could be a real find for all you whiskey hunters - particularly those with a bold, frontier spirit.
