Golden Horse

Golden Horse was the brand name Toa Shuzo gave to its first attempt at producing whisky, a mixture of imported scotch whisky and own produced grain whisky to create a blended whisky made initially in a continuous steel still, before it was later replaced by a copper based one, used for the production of other alcohols. A license to produce alcohol such as whisky was granted to Toa Shuzo in 1946, but the business dates back to 1625 and had began life like a number of Japanese distillers, as a sake producer, with brands such as as Haregiku, Kamino-Izumi, Miyako-Homare.

Initially based out of Chichibu City, in 1941 the company moved to Hanyu city, where its office are still located today, and the firm used to own the now defunct Hanyu Distillery. Despite serious efforts in 1980 to produce a Scotch-style malt whisky, combined with the purchase of two steam-heated pot stills, by March 2000 the company was forced to give up its whisky business due to weakened profitability. This was until 2004, when the takeover of Toa Shuzo by the King Jozo Group hinted at a brighter future, and in 2016 its whisky business was restarted with Golden Horse Musashi Whisky and Golden Horse Bushu Whisky.

Unfortunately, by then it too little, too late for Hanyu Distillery, and while the Golden Horse brand is still owned by Toa Shuzo, whiskies such as Bushu and Musashi are drawn from the last remaining stocks. At the time of writing, it is not yet unclear what will happen to the Golden Horse brand once these stocks have been used up, so you better get them while they’re still around.
