Copper Fox is made up of multiple distilleries, its flagship distillery, which opened in Sperryville in 2005, and another distillery based in Williamsburg, which opened in 2016. Rick Wasmund journeyed to Scotland in 2000, after dreaming of opening his own distillery. He ended up taking on an apprenticeship at Bowmore Distillery for six weeks, picking up all the vital information and skills. Three years later, Copper Fox Whisky was first launched as the very first applewood-aged whisky. When the distillery opened in 2005, it was the first US distillery with a malt floor and kiln since the repeal of Prohibition. However, instead of peat, the distillery uses local fruitwoods (such as applewood and cherrywood) the smoke and dry the grain.
