Catena Zapata

The story of Argentina’s Bodega Catena Zapata begins in 1902 with Nicola Catena, an Italian immigrant. He planted his first vineyard in Mendoza, and the winery has remained in the family’s hands until this day. You’ll find the winery itself in Agrelo in Luján de Cuyo, but its vineyards can still be found throughout Mendoza.

Today it’s owned today by third and fourth generation Catenas, Nicolás and his daughter Laura. The winery has made a name for itself through resurrecting the Malbec grape, and Nicolás revolutionised Argentinian wine in the 1980s through utilising and discovering extremely high altitude terroirs in the foothills of the Andes. One such example is the revered Adrianna Vineyard – found at 5,000 feet elevation, it’s been dubbed the Grand Cru of South America.
