Auchentoshan

One of the few triple-distilled single malts in Scotland, in May of 2008, Auchentoshan (pronounced ‘OKKen-TOSHan’) went through a revamp; bottle labels were altered, the range was changed and the visitor centre was renovated. The origins of the distillery are quite shrouded, it originally started life under the name ‘Duntocher’, which was first mentioned around the turn of the nineteenth century. In 1834, it was renamed Auchintoshan, taking from the Gaelic ‘achad oisnin’ or ‘corner of the field’.

Geographically, it lies only just within the Lowlands and, although a Lowlander, Auchentoshan’s water source – near the Cochna Loch in the Kilpatrick Hills, is, in fact, in the Highlands. During the Second World War, bombing on the Clydebank shipyards, which lie in close proximity, left the distillery greatly damaged with a substantial loss of spirit. In 1948, reconstruction began and the distillery was also given the new, modern spelling ‘Auchentoshan’.

In 1984, the distillery was bought by Morrison Bowmore, which itself became a subsidiary of the Japanese company Suntory a decade later. None of the current range is peated, and at the heart lies the 2008 release, ‘Classic’, an eighteen year-old and ‘Three Wood’; matured in Oloroso, Pedro Ximinez Sherry and Bourbon casks.

First mention of the distillery Duntocher, which may be identical to Auchentoshan.

1823

An official license is obtained by the owner Mr. Thorne.

1903

The distillery is purchased by John Maclachlan.

1923

G. & J. Maclachlan goes bankrupt and a new company, Maclachlans Ltd is formed.

1941

The distillery is severely damaged by a German bomb raid and reconstruction does not commence until 1948.

1960

Maclachlans Ltd is purchased by the brewery J. & R. Tennant Brewers.

1969

Auchentoshan is bought by Eadie Cairns Ltd who who starts major modernizations.

1984

Stanley P. Morrison, eventually becoming Morrison Bowmore, becomes new owner.

1994

Suntory buys Morrison Bowmore.

2000

A cask strength 31 year old is launched in a limited edition.

2002

Auchentoshan Three Wood is launched in May.

2004

More than a £1 million is spent on a new, refurbished visitor centre. The oldest Auchentoshan ever, 42 years, is released.

2006

Auchentoshan 18 year old is released.

2007

A 40 year old and a 1976 30 years old are released.

2008

New packaging as well as new expressions - Classic, 18 year old and 1988.

This was distilled at Auchentoshan in 1999, and aged in top quality sherry wood for 12 years. It was taken to Bruichladdich, where it was bottled in 2011, giving an outturn of 2,100 bottles.  More info
