Throw a stone from any point in the United States of America and you’ll more than likely hit the door of one of the hundreds upon hundreds of American breweries. There have been brewers in America since the 1600s, though over time the number has continued to grow, particularly in the later 1800s. And then the temperance movement and Prohibition happened. Uh oh.
Prohibition severely cut down the number of breweries significantly, with only a few of the largest breweries permitted to continue brewing. Even after Prohibition was repealed, breweries didn't immediately shoot back up in numbers. Soon enough though, brewing became popular again, particularly modern craft brewing from the 1970s and '80s onwards, which we have to thank for bringing Pale Ales and IPAs back into the spotlight. These days, craft brewing is absolutely massive in the USA, and you can find many pubs and bars specialising in the latest and greatest beer from these inventive producers.
