Refill

Refill: Typically the term refers to casks. A first fill cask is one that has been used by another industry, sherry for example, though it has not yet been used to mature whisk(e)y. A refill cask is one that has already been used to mature whisk(e)y. First fill casks impart a much stronger flavour upon maturing spirit, for they still have a portion of the previously matured liquid left, soaked into the wood. Every time the cask is refilled, less and less of the original liquid is present, thus it has decreasingly influence on the flavour of the maturing spirit.
