After soft launches in Mexico City, Sydney, and San Juan, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/whisky\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">whisky<\/a> is now rolling out across global travel retail and is set to arrive at Master of Malt this autumn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s the first core range innovation from Dr Emma Walker, who became Johnnie Walker\u2019s master blender in 2022, following the limited edition launch of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/post\/johnnie-walker-blue-label-ice-chalet-review.aspx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Blue Label Ice Chalet<\/a> last October.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Ruby, however, is no mere line extension. It\u2019s a sweeter, fruit-driven blend built on the foundations of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/whiskies\/johnnie-walker-black-label-12-year-old-whisky\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Black Label<\/a>, brimming with its own character.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We attended a tasting launch over Zoom recently so can give you the full details. Walker described it as \u201ca big, smooth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/country\/scotch-whisky\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scotch whisky<\/a>\u201d, loaded with lush, jammy fruit \u2013 think raspberry compote, blackberry pie, and plums, layered over figs, honey, and maraschino cherries, all gently wrapped in the signature Johnnie Walker smoke. That smoke isn\u2019t dominant, Walker says, it\u2019s more like a seasoning, elevating the fruit and sweetness rather than overwhelming them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One key player here is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/distilleries\/roseisle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Roseisle Distillery<\/a> \u2013 a relatively under-the-radar site until now, having mainly featured in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/post\/win-the-diageo-special-releases-2024.aspx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Diageo\u2019s Special Releases<\/a>. The 3,000 m\u00b2 distillery, one of the largest, was built to provide a steady supply of malts for Diageo\u2019s blends. Its inclusion here further thrusts it into the spotlight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Built for flexibility as much as scale, Roseisle can do long fermentations and increase copper contact at the drop of a hat, which is what was done here to allow Walker to dial in exactly the fruity, expressive spirit she wanted for Black Ruby.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It doesn\u2019t stop there. The blend brings in waxy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/region-style\/highland\/single-malt-whisky\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Highland<\/a> richness from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/distilleries\/clynelish-whisky-distillery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Clynelish<\/a>, refreshing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/region-style\/lowland\/single-malt-whisky\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lowland<\/a> sweetness from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/distilleries\/glenkinchie-whisky-distillery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Glenkinchie<\/a>, lush <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/region-style\/speyside\/single-malt-whisky\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Speyside<\/a> fruit from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/distilleries\/cardhu-whisky-distillery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cardhu<\/a>, and that unmistakable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/region-style\/islay\/single-malt-whisky\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Islay<\/a> peated punch from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/distilleries\/caol-ila-whisky-distillery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Caol Ila<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/country-style\/scotch\/grain-whisky\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grain whisky<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/distilleries\/cameron-bridge-whisky-distillery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cameronbridge<\/a> ties it all together with creamy vanilla and structure.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_32944\" style=\"width: 780px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32944\" class=\"size-large wp-image-32944\" src=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/20201026_Glenkinchie-launch_03-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Our favourite feature of the new-look Glenkinchie? The psychedelic Johnnie Walker\" width=\"770\" height=\"514\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-32944\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Glenkinchie is a key component of Johnnie Walker blends<\/p><\/div>\n<h3><b>Not just another finish<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This isn\u2019t a cask-finished whisky \u2013 it\u2019s a blend of whiskies matured in a variety of barrels, each selected to complement the profile.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First-fill red wine casks lead the charge (especially those filled with Roseisle), joined by PX, oloroso, and bourbon casks, bringing depth, spice, and a balancing sweetness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walker explains the challenge was to make something new that still felt part of the Johnnie Walker family. She likened the whiskies to being part of a family, Black Label and Black Ruby may have the same surname, but they have different personalities.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Johnnie Walker Black Ruby review<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johnnie Walker Black Ruby has a lightweight bottle (the product of some sustainability-led innovation) that\u2019s bartender-friendly as always, and very pretty too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was made with cocktails in mind and we\u2019ve featured one here, the Ramble, made by brand ambassador Stefanie Anderson (a very fine bartender who got the role after winning <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/post\/stefanie-anderson-wins-taliskers-race-to-skye-comp.aspx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Race to Skye<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There were also food suggestions on our call, with Walker delightfully pitching Chicken Bhuna with a Black Ruby Highball. You can\u2019t go wrong with a Charcuterie board though.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johnnie Walker Black Ruby is more than just a Black Label remix. It hits the mark in how fruit-forward it is, rich in blackcurrant, raspberry jammy notes. It has real structure and intention, although I think it is more smoke and sea-led than perhaps intended (although I love that quality). It also should intrigue whisky fans who want to taste a blend featuring Roseisle in a leading role for the first time. The sugar and honey complement the whisky\u2019s rich fruit character, while the lemon juice lifts the delicate spice and smoky finish. For glassware, an elevated tumbler adds a nice touch.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ingredients:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">35ml Johnnie Walker Black Ruby<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">25ml lemon juice<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5ml* honey\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5ml* granulated sugar\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3 blackberries<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Method:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Add all ingredients to a shaker, without ice, and muddle thoroughly for five seconds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then add cubed ice and hard shake for 10-12 seconds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Double strain into a tumbler glass, then fill with crushed ice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Garnish with two blackberries and a lemon wheel (optional).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>You can buy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/whiskies\/johnnie-walker\/johnnie-walker-black-ruby-whisky\/\">Johnnie Walker Black Ruby<\/a> from Master of Malt now.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*or one teaspoon<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Johnnie Walker Black Ruby is now available from Master of Malt.
