Rum. Rummy. But why?<\/p><\/div>\n<h3><b>Where \u2018Rummy\u2019 comes in<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rummy isn\u2019t just one game \u2013 it\u2019s a whole family of card games, all based around drawing and discarding cards to form pleasing little combinations called \u2018melds\u2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think of it as the card world\u2019s equivalent of Tetris but with more chance of passive-aggressive glares.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The original Rummy format rewards the first player to get rid of all their cards by neatly laying down melds \u2013 and your score depends on how much \u2018deadwood\u2019 (unmatched cards) you and your opponent have left hanging. It\u2019s politely cutthroat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the years, Rummy spawned more spin-offs than a hit Marvel film: Contract Rummy, Michigan Rummy, Carousel, Canasta, Vatican (we\u2019re not making that up), and the star of the show \u2013 Gin Rummy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gin Rummy takes the core rules of traditional Rummy and mixes in elements of Conquian, Rum Rummy, and Knock Rummy. Baker and his son C. Graham Baker with inventing the game in 1909. The name? A playful nod to the game\u2019s heritage \u2013 rum (as in \u2018Rum Rummy\u2019) and gin, because why not double down on the booze?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to card game historians Albert H. Morehead and Geoffrey Mott-Smith (yes, that\u2019s a real job), the name came from the younger Baker and rode the wave of popularity during the 1940s, particularly in Hollywood and radio circles. Celebs loved it. And like anything celebrities touched, it became a full-blown craze.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another theory, courtesy of John Scarne in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scarne on Cards<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1949), claims Gin Rummy evolved from a game called \u2018Whiskey Poker\u2019, which then became \u2018Rum Poker\u2019, then just \u2018Rum\u2019, and finally \u2018Rummy\u2019. There\u2019s also a mention of Conquian being a possible ancestor. But it makes sense.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Card games, especially the sociable, fast-play ones like Rummy, Poker, and Euchre, were often played in saloons, speakeasies, and lounges where drinks flowed freely.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naming them after drinks was a way to market them to their intended audience: people after a bit of fun, a bit of money, and definitely a bit of booze.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides, who doesn\u2019t want to play a game that sounds like it might come with a side of olives?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The Last Drop: Gin rummy through the\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gin Rummy\u2019s name comes from a spirited mash-up of its roots. Created in Brooklyn, loved in Hollywood, and still played.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for all the booze names?
