Whether you’ve got a shelf full of single casks or you’re still figuring out the difference between Speyside and Islay, what goes with whisky matters.

The art of the whisky pairing

Yes, you can pair it with food. Cheese, chocolate, charcuterie, smoked fish, whatever you’ve got knocking about. You can lengthen it, shake it, stir it, or split it with soda. But don’t box it in. Whisky can work anywhere in the right hands. Summer heat and sideways rain. With old friends, bad dates, or those long chats in a quiet kitchen on the kind of night that drifts away from you.

Pairing whisky is not about rules. It is about contrast and chemistry. Salty with sweet. Smoke with fat. Spice with citrus. It is about noticing what changes when you put two good things next to each other and letting them argue a bit.

This guide leans into the classics and the leftfield. Expect the obvious. Expect the slightly unhinged. Find something that makes you rethink a bottle you thought you already knew. Pair the flavour of the food with the profile of whisky by either finding commonality or by creating interesting contrasts.
