Forget your ab-er-LOO-ers or ab-er-lores. It\u2019s \u201cAB-er-lour\u201d. Located in the village of the same name, Aberlour was founded in 1826 and takes its name from the Gaelic <\/span>Aber<\/span><\/i> “mouth of a river” and <\/span>lour <\/span><\/i>(a variant of “Lour Burn”), a nearby stream.<\/span><\/p>\n

Clynelish: Pronounced \u201cKLYNE-leesh\u201d<\/b><\/a><\/h3>\n

Clynelish is derived from Gaelic, <\/span>Cl\u00ec <\/span><\/i>meaning sloping or sheltered, and <\/span>n\u00e8is<\/span><\/i> meaning a meadow. The distillery is located near Brora in the Highlands of Scotland and was founded back in 1819.<\/span><\/p>\n

GlenDronach: Pronounced \u201cglen-DRON-ack\u201d<\/b><\/a><\/h3>\n

Often mispronounced as glen-DRO-nach or glen-dro-NAK, Glendronach (\u201cglen-DRON-ack\u201d) comes from the Gaelic for <\/span>Glen<\/span><\/i>, meaning valley and <\/span>Dronach<\/span><\/i> referring to brambles or thorn bushes. The distillery is located in the Highland region near Huntly and was founded in 1826.<\/span><\/p>\n

Aultmore: Pronounced \u201cALT-more\u201d<\/b><\/a><\/h3>\n

In 1896 the Aultmore distillery was founded in Speyside, taking its name from the nearby Aultmore Burn, which supplies the distillery\u2019s water. The word derives from the Gaelic for “Big Burn” or “Big Stream\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Did you “ry-ack” when you should have “ree-akh’d”?<\/p><\/div>\n

BenRiach: Pronounced \u201cBen-REE-akh\u201d\u00a0<\/b><\/a><\/h3>\n

BenRiach is pronounced \u201cBen-REE-akh\u201d, with a slight “kh” sound at the end, not ben-RY-ack or ben-RICK. The distillery, founded in Speyside in 1898, gets its name from the Gaelic for mountain, <\/span>Ben<\/span><\/i>, while <\/span>Riach<\/span><\/i> means “grassy” or “grey.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Fettercairn: Pronounced \u201cfetter-KERN\u201d<\/b><\/a><\/h3>\n

Fettercairn is derived from Gaelic, with <\/span>Fothair<\/span><\/i> meaning a slope or terraced land, and <\/span>Cairn<\/span><\/i> referring to a pile of stones or boundary marker. The distillery is located in the town of Fettercairn in the Highlands and has been since 1824, and it\u2019s very tempting to call it fet-TER-cairn or fet-er-CAIRN. But don\u2019t you go doing it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tomatin: Pronounced \u201cToe-MAH-tin\u201d<\/b><\/a><\/h3>\n

I said TOM-a-tin for years. Some of you may well still do. But, alas, we were wrong. Say it like you’re going to say “tomato”. But not “tomato”. That wasn’t very helpful, was it? Damn you, language! Toe-mah-toe. Toe-mah-tin. Got it? Good. Tomatin comes from Gaelic, <\/span>Tom<\/span><\/i>, meaning <\/span>\u201cthat pillock who broke your heart\u201d <\/span>“hillock” or “small hill” and <\/span>atin<\/span><\/i>, referring to a juniper bush. The distillery is located in the Highlands near Inverness and was founded back in 1897.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bonus ball – <\/b>Islay: Pronounced \u201cEYE-lah\u201d<\/b><\/a><\/h3>\n

Not a distillery, but a major part of Scotch whisky as one of its five recognised regions, Islay is mispronounced as is-lay or iz-lay. But it\u2019s \u201cEYE-lah\u201d. The island in the Inner Hebrides is home to several famous Scotch whisky distilleries but the origin of the name “Islay” is uncertain.
