It\u2019s news that\u2019s blown some minds. The same goes for popular Pernod stablemate Malibu rum liqueur, which it turns out had to create a separate vegan recipe for use in their recent high-profile Pi\u00f1a Oatlada collaboration with Oatly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kahl\u00faa, to be fair, states on its own site that it\u2019s \u201cNOT acceptable for a vegan or vegetarian diet\u201d. There are also sites such as Barnivore that do the leg work on things like this for you (lord bless the interwebs), but clearly many were still unaware. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thespiritsbusiness.com\/2024\/08\/kahlua-and-malibu-not-suitable-for-vegetarians\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Spirits Business<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 Lauren Bowes shared the facts earlier this week, with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/08\/12\/this-popular-cocktail-isnt-suitable-vegetarians-drink-instead-21406304\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ladbible.com\/lifestyle\/food-and-drink\/baby-guinness-warning-recipe-change-kahlua-coffee-vegan-935867-20240808\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LADbible<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and others subsequently sharing it to still wider audiences, many of whom were shocked. Some refined cane sugars, especially in the US, use bone meal (electrically charred cattle bones) in the charcoal filtering process which makes it all sparkly and white. This isn\u2019t the case for organic sugar in the US or for any beet sugar. It\u2019s also not really an issue with UK sugar, although many icing sugars contain dried egg white (not an issue for vegetarians). That old bag of Tate &amp; Lyle granulated cane sugar you keep in the cupboard for guests who inexplicably ask for sugar in their tea* is totally vegan, for example.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eyebrow raising aside, the reasons why various people follow vegetarian or more plant-based diets (or don&#8217;t) may also inform how much they care about this. Even for ethical vegans who seek to exclude animal cruelty from their lives wherever possible, it\u2019s nearly impossible to do so completely.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bone meal, for example, is also used as a fertiliser for growing food crops, including organic ones here in the UK. For drinks specifically, isinglass (from fish), gelatine, egg whites, or casein (milk protein) are all used as fining agents for clarification in many wines and beers. It\u2019s something of a minefield, and as a vegan myself (I know, the horror!) I\u2019m aware that I can be lazy about such processing considerations at times. Offer me two similar IPAs where I know one uses isinglass and the other doesn\u2019t use any animal derivatives during manufacture and it\u2019s an easy choice, however.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately it comes down to transparency, so everyone can make their own informed choices. It\u2019s also good to know these things before you whip up your next round of Espresso Martinis for friends (or indeed customers).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Top 10 vegan alternatives to Kahl\u00faa<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it\u2019s sometimes difficult to be 100% sure \u2013 and Kahl\u00faa\u2019s transparency should absolutely be applauded despite it perhaps not being the finest PR week for them \u2013 the following alternatives are to the best of our knowledge entirely vegan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-56472\" src=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/FAIR-Cafe-1024x668.jpg\" alt=\"A bottle of FAIR. Caf\u00e9 Liqueur is made with Arabica coffee beans from Mexico. At The Spirits Business Awards Liqueur Masters 2019, it was the only coffee liqueur to receive a Master medal, praised for its \u201croasted hazelnut\u201d finish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Tia Maria Cold Brew coffee liqueur - Perfect to make the Espresso Martini cocktail\" width=\"770\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hAnm7bPaS4Q?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/liqueurs\/disaronno\/tia-maria-liqueur\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tia Maria<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The &#8216;other&#8217; classic option\u00a0<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">for coffee liqueurs is perhaps the easiest swap<\/span>. It proudly states \u201cVegan Friendly\u201d on its website, and is just about the most affordable on this list too. Tia Maria is of course a household name, and such is its ubiquity that at times it hasn\u2019t even felt the need to put \u201ccoffee\u201d on their front label. Giffard, founded in 1885, makes this with organic and Fair Trade Honduran Lenca coffee (a blend of catuai, caturra, tipica and bourbon Arabica varieties). This speciality from the trailblazing Californian craft distillers has been a favourite at MoM Towers ever since it hit these shores a little over 10 years ago. Blimey, time really flies! Vegan cream liqueur brand <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/liqueurs\/liquid-oats\/liquid-oats-vanilla-honey-liqueur\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liquid Oats<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tells us that \u201cif you are looking for a 100% true vegan White Russian opt for Caff\u00e8 Borghetti or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/liqueurs\/quick-brown-fox\/quick-brown-fox-coffee-liqueur\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quick Brown Fox<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> coffee liqueurs, we recommend both as we know that they are vegan and delicious\u201d. It also uses Caff\u00e8 Borghetti in its vegan Baby Guinness recipe. It also recently picked up a Gold medal and was named Best English Coffee Liqueur at the World Liqueur Awards 2024. Obviously, VIVIR Caf\u00e9 is a Mexican product, just like Kahl\u00faa. Instead of refined sugar, however, it\u2019s sweetened with Piloncillo sugar, a raw form of pure cane sugar commonly used in Mexican cooking. It\u2019s also the only bottle on this list that states \u201cVegan\u201d on the front label.
