{"id":56053,"date":"2024-07-08T15:00:39","date_gmt":"2024-07-08T14:00:39","guid":{"rendered":"\/blog\/post\/how-to-make-an-easy-pina-colada\/"},"modified":"2026-04-15T19:51:41","modified_gmt":"2026-04-15T18:51:41","slug":"how-to-make-an-easy-pina-colada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/post\/how-to-make-an-easy-pina-colada\/","title":{"rendered":"How To Make An Easy Pi\u00f1a Colada"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As I am sure you&#8217;re all aware, it&#8217;s <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">P<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">i\u00f1a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colada day on Wednesday 10 July so we&#8217;re showing you a simple way to make one of the world&#8217;s great cocktails. <\/span>With a good flavoured <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/rum\/\">rum<\/a> and fresh ingredients.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I had a<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">P<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">i\u00f1a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colada epiphany a few years ago. I\u2019d always dismissed it as the sort of lurid concoction laden with sugar, cream and cocktail umbrellas that Del Boy might order in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Only_Fools_and_Horses\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only Fools and Horses<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Or that my older brother would drink on family holidays on Lanzarote. But a French friend made one for me with fresh pineapple, coconut water and Martinque rum, and it was about the most delicious thing I\u2019ve ever tasted. It was so delicious, that I didn&#8217;t notice how much rum was in it until I tried to stand up.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>What is a Pi\u00f1a Colada<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what is a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">P<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">i\u00f1a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colada? The name literally means \u2018strained pineapple\u2019 in Spanish and something like the modern version was invented in 1954 by a barman at the Caribe Hilton in Puerto Rico called <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ram\u00f3n &#8220;Monchito&#8221; Marrero, or so the story goes. There are other pretenders to the crown of the inventor of the world\u2019s greatest pineapple-based cocktail. The story is further complicated by the existence of a Cuban cocktail called a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">P<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">i\u00f1a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colada<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mentioned in the 1920s which mixes pineapple with rum but doesn\u2019t contain coconut. It was the Puerto Rican version, however, that went global in the 1960s and naturally it began to change a bit. The cream of coconut from the originally was substituted with the sort of cream that might once have had something to do with cows, pasteurised or tinned pineapple replaced the fresh stuff, and cheap rums sneaked in like cheap rums do along with glace cherries, umbrellas, fireworks etc. Just the sort of thing that Del Boy would have ordered in the Nag&#8217;s Head.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_56055\" style=\"width: 780px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-56055\" class=\"size-large wp-image-56055\" src=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Pina-3-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Pina Colada\" width=\"770\" height=\"514\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Pina-3-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Pina-3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Pina-3-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Pina-3-375x250.jpg 375w, https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Pina-3-1050x700.jpg 1050w, https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Pina-3-1200x800.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Pina-3.jpg 1800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-56055\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A fresh take on a classic cocktail<\/p><\/div>\n<h5><strong>Use good quality ingredients<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But made properly, a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">P<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">i\u00f1a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colada<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a magnificent thing combining as it does the three most tropical ingredients imaginable: pineapple, rum and coconut. Imagine if you could get a mango in there somewhere, or would that be too tropical? Anyway, as long as you use decent ingredients you can\u2019t go wrong. So fresh pineapple juice, coconut cream or water and, of course, a rum that tastes like rum.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re using Aluna Coconut Rum that is unusual among coconut rums in really tasting of both rum and coconut. In fact, it tastes like opening up a coconut to find that it\u2019s full of rum rather than coconut water. Wouldn\u2019t that be amazing? That\u2019s because it\u2019s not only macerated with coconut but also sweetened with coconut water so it\u2019s about the nearest thing you\u2019ll get to a rum-filled coconut. The base spirit is a blend of Guatemala and Caribbean rums. It\u2019s bottled at 37.5% ABV, so significantly stronger than some other coconut rum drinks so be careful standing up after a couple.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><strong>How to make a simple Pi\u00f1a Colada<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>Ingredients:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50ml <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/rum\/aluna\/aluna-coconut-rum\/\">Aluna coconut rum<\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50ml Coconut water<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">100ml Fresh pineapple juice<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Juice of half a lime<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Method:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Add all the ingredients to an ice-filled shaker. Shake hard and strain into a tall glass filled with ice.
