It might seem like the most humble of all cocktails. In fact, is it really a cocktail at all? Mmmm, one for the philosophers. But to make a good Gin and Tonic, every factor has to be just right.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/authors\/v\/vf-vj\/victoria-moore\/\">Victoria Moore<\/a> writes in<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to Drink<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cTo make a good <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/gin\/\">gin<\/a> and tonic you do not just have to care about every ingredient, you have to be anguished about them.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So to help you in your quest for juniper and quinine perfection. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are 8 rules for making the perfect G&amp;T.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9718\" src=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/iStock-905567424-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"Spanish drinks Gin Tonica\" width=\"561\" height=\"374\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/iStock-905567424-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/iStock-905567424-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/iStock-905567424-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/iStock-905567424.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 561px) 100vw, 561px\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><strong>1) Choose the right gin<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You need a good, pungent juniper-forward gin, ideally with as much alcohol as possible. Over 40% please. Tonic water has a strong taste so you need a gin which can punch through that. Your floral ethereal gin just isn\u2019t going to cut it here. Three great suggestions below. They&#8217;re all brilliant:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/gin\/ableforths\/bathtub-gin\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bathtub Gin<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/gin\/tanqueray\/tanqueray-london-dry-gin\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tanqueray London Dry Gin<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/gin\/sipsmith\/sipsmith-london-dry-gin\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sipsmith London Dry Gin<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h5><strong>2) Fizzy tonic\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your tonic water must be bursting with bubbles. So please no 1.5 litre bottles that have been sitting at the back of the cupboard. Use those little cans or bottles. As for the brand, it\u2019s up to you. Many people will only touch Fever Tree but don\u2019t overlook Schweppes. In a taste test conducted by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harper\u2019s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> magazine a few years back, it was that old stalwart that came on top.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><strong>3) Make sure everything is as cold as possible<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gin should be kept in the freezer and tonic water in the fridge. As <a href=\"https:\/\/henryjeffreys.substack.com\/p\/cocktail-chatter\">Kingsley Amis<\/a> advised, you really want a separate fridge for alcoholic drinks or people will be <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cconstantly filling up any refrigerator they have a claim on, even its ice-compartment, with irrelevant rubbish like food.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><strong>4) F-f-f-f-freezing ice<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is crucial: the ice must be straight from the freezer and you will need lots of it. Fill the glass with ice. The more cold ice you have, the slower it will melt, so the less dilution you will have. And don\u2019t use that ice from the supermarket which has a hole in it as it will melt quickly. Make your own using ice trays and filtered water.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><strong>5) A nice heavy glass<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/glassware\/\">beautiful glass<\/a> can elevate your drink. We love a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/glassware\/lsa\/lsa-gin-tumblers-set-of-two-glassware\/\">heavy tumbler<\/a> for a G&amp;T but a Highball glass works well or if you must, one of those Spanish fishbowl things. Whatever you use, make sure it\u2019s clean with no washing up liquid residue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><strong>6) Measure your gin<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While free pouring looks cool, we recommend you use a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/barware\/urban-bar\/urban-bar-gold-plated-ginza-jigger-barware\/\">jigger<\/a>. Not only does this ensure that your drink is at the correct strength but it\u2019s also handy for keeping track of how much you\u2019re drinking. On the subject of ratios, one third gin to two thirds tonic makes a good strong G&amp;T, some people will want it weaker or stronger, but whatever you do, don\u2019t drown the gin in tonic. You don\u2019t have to use the whole can. And give it a stir, nobody wants a weak first sip and pure gin at the end. Don\u2019t overstir though, or you\u2019ll get rid of the bubbles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><strong>7) A fresh garnish<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go with whatever you want: orange, lime, lemon or even rosemary (exotic!) but it must be freshly cut. You don&#8217;t want some sad pre-cut bits of lemon that has been sweating in the fridge for days.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><strong>8) Serve with salty snacks<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is very important.
