As a grape-based spirit, Cognac falls under the brandy umbrella but must adhere to a more specific set of production methods and standards, including being made in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/country\/french-cognac\/\">Cognac<\/a> region of France and ageing for a minimum of two years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The maturation process brings complexity and depth that not only works a treat sipped neat, but also makes them the ideal foundation for a well-constructed cocktail. When rye, bourbon and Scotch were being drunk by grizzled rustic types, Cognac was the original cocktail ingredient in such classics as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/post\/cocktail-of-the-week-the-old-fashioned-2.aspx\">Old Fashioned<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/post\/cocktail-the-of-week-the-sazerac.aspx\">Sazerac<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/post\/cocktail-of-the-week-mint-julep.aspx\">Mint Julep<\/a>. Garnish with some grated nutmeg or a piece of Cadbury\u2019s flake if you\u2019re feeling decadent.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>French 75<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The original recipe calls for gin but switch it out for Cognac and you\u2019ll find elegant richness and warmth that takes this Champagne cocktail to the next level.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ingredients:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">45ml <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/cognac\/remy-martin\/remy-martin-1738-accord-royal-cognac\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">R\u00e9my Martin 1738 Accord Royal<\/span><\/a><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15ml simple syrup<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15ml lemon juice<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Champagne or sparkling wine to top<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lemon twist<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Method:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shake the first three ingredients with ice and strain into a coupe or Champagne flute. Top up with chilled Champagne and garnish with a twist of lemon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>Brandy Sour<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seemingly simple on paper, this one requires precision to pull off successfully. Metaxa is a Greek brandy sweetened with wine so if you\u2019re using something else, you\u2019ll want to adjust the syrup levels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Method:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50ml <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/brandy\/metaxa\/metaxa-12-stars-brandy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metaxa 12 Stars<\/span><\/a><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20ml lemon juice<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10ml sugar syrup<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lemon slice<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Method:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shake all the ingredients hard and quickly with lots of ice (you don\u2019t want too much dilution).
